Whole Foods CEO: Yes, We Have No Obamacare

Whole Foods CEO: Yes, We Have No Obamacare

— By Josh Harkinson

Last August, John Mackey, the founder and CEO of Whole Foods, sparked outrage in the liberal blogosphere and a by publishing a full-throated critique of Obamacare on the op-ed page of the Wall Street Journal. He argued that the country should "move in the opposite direction—toward less government control and more individual empowerment," and held up Whole Foods' own health plan as an alternative: "Our plan's costs are much lower than typical health insurance, while providing a very high degree of worker satisfaction."

But it turns out that Mackey's claims, which also fueled conservative opposition to the Democrats' health-care bill, were misleading. In a memo that he sent to all employees last month, obtained by Mother Jones, Mackey concedes that Whole Foods is actually sinking under the weight of its health care expenses. In the past seven years, he writes, the cost of the company's health care plan as a percentage of its sales has gone up 60 percent. This year's tab is "equal to about 10% of the total Team Member compensation of $2 billion," Mackey complains. "On average over the past three years we have spent more on health care costs than we have made in total net profits!"

Far from being a model of do-it-yourself health care reform, then, Whole Foods' costly insurance plan illustrates why Mackey's opposition to the Affordable Care Act was misguided. Like other major grocery store chains, Whole Foods is facing rampant inflation in health costs. (Unlike Whole Foods, however, Safeway supported key parts of the ACA.) Experts blame this on a lack of incentives for doctors to control costs and the 44 million uninsured Americans who burden the system. The health care bill passed in March is meant to address those problems, in part, by mandating that everyone purchase insurance, subsidizing coverage for the neediest, and creating exchanges in which individuals can pool their resources to purchase affordable coverage. A report by the Business Roundtable, an association of CEOs from large companies, estimates that the bill could lower health care costs by as much as $3,000 per employee by 2019.

Yet Mackey, an avowed libertarian, appears to see only one upside in the passage of health-care reform: The opportunity to use it as a scapegoat for Whole Foods' increasing health costs. In the memo, he informs his employees that their insurance deductibles will be increasing to $2,000 for the company's medical plan and $1,000 for its prescription plan, a spike that he blames entirely on the federal government: "This is very important for everyone to understand: 100% of the increases in deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums in 2011 compared to 2010 are due to new federal mandates and regulations." (His emphasis.)

<...>

A spokeswoman for Whole Foods confirmed the Mackey memo's authenticity but declined to answer any questions about the company's health care plan.

I had been going to Whole Foods now and then since HCR passed for a few odds and ends. Not anymore.

I will never shop at Whole Foods again.

16. It's true. It's a great store, full of really good stuff. But every time I go there,
I look around in amazement at the people shopping there, wondering how in the hell they can afford baskets of Whole Food groceries! That store's goods are VERY expensive. I've been there a few times just to check it out or get something special unavailable elsewhere. I make a good living, but I could not afford to shop there regularly (and WOULD not pay those prices).

Locally, there was an incident last year, where a robber accosted a woman with groceries going to her car. He appeared ready to nab her, and went straight for the goods: her ring. Turns out it was a diamond ring worth tens of thousands of dollars. THAT'S who shops at Whole Foods.

22. Certain items are cheaper.. certain are more expensive.
If you shop carefully, you can save money at whole foods, but you have to be VERY careful.

9. Argghh...That guy is such an asshole. I really wish Trader Joes would start selling a wider
variety of produce. I would shop there exclusively. The chain grocery stores sell some organics but they SUCK. They're always wilted, bruised, droopy and overripe, all for a premium price. Trader Joe's is fantastic except for its limited produce. I go to one produce market that has good organics, but it's across town in an area with terrible traffic so it's really hard to get there.

I've looked into some of the CSAs but haven't found any locally that allow you to pick out your produce. We'd end up with lots of items we can't eat for various reasons and that seems like such a waste.

We eat kale or chard every single day and WF is the only place that carries organic kale regularly. In the summer I can avoid WF because of the farmer's markets, but this time of year I don't have much choice. So frustrating!

14. My local TJ's has in fact expanded the produce section.
And freshness is way up. Great stuff there today including gorgeous fresh eggplants, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts and too many too list.

15. I've noticed that too. I buy as much as I can there, but WF seems to be the only
place I can get organic kale. Since I eat it every day that's important. TJs has a bag of mixed greens (collard, mustard and something else) but it's not organic and I don't like any of them as much as I like kale. Greens are one of the things that are important to eat organic if you can, so I don't compromise there.

One thing TJs has that I love are cocktail grapefruits. They only have them for a short time in Jan/Feb but they are AMAZING. They're like a whole bunch of citrus fruits rolled into one, super sweet and incredibly juicy. They have a lot of seed so it takes awhile to eat them but they are so good it's worth it. I got my whole extended family hooked on them.

10. What a dumb ass..
No one would be forced to take any new insurance, you get to keep what you have...what an ignorant fucker.

Just think of it, if we all received Medicare as our national health insurance, Whole Foods would not have to BUY their employees health insurance saving the company MONEY! John Mackey has not clue what the fuck he is talking about.

13. I wish I could stop shopping there.
But i already did.

We need to get a few letters off to the "free" sponsors and advertising they get from being given prominent placement on shows like Martha Stewart and Top Chef.

are getting blamed on the new HCR law- whether accurate or not. Isn't there a special place in hell reserved for people who lie- and then keep on lying over and over again (and when are Rush, Sean, Beck, Billo, Boortz, et. al scheduled to go)? :banghead:

Typical of 'personal responsibility' repukes and libertarian-cuckoos. Shift the blame to someone else whenever something is YOUR fault.
