1. OK he is great in photo ops, how about getting back to
Washington and working on getting someone else a job rather than trying to save his.

10. What are you talking about?
Every right-thinking Amurkin knows that the only way for a president to create good old Amurkin jobs is for him to stay right here in Amurka behind his Amurkin desk and talk to and interact with only Amurkins and stop talking to and interacting with them furners.

18. Thank you for the compliment - it is disturbing when people here -
Edited on Wed Nov-10-10 10:15 AM by karynnj
including some that like this posters who is a real genuine Democrat from posts over the year, end up be deceived by right wing propaganda.

In a global world, it is critical for our President to be out there as are number one statesman, diplomat and salesman. Looking at the Indian media's coverage of Obama (I haven't seen any Indonesian), this trip would be worth even the inflated beyond believe Republican made up cost estimate. India is an important country and in the past, we have often not been a good friend because of geo-political games started I think by kissinger.

What is disturbing is that last night, CNN gave major live coverage of Palin's "first major speech since the primaries" aka a speech at a fund raiser. Aside from realizing that no Democrat got coverage of mundane fundraisers in 2006 after we won back BOTH the House and Senate, there is the major problem that Obama's two very important speeches did not get the coverage they deserved.

Unlike Palin's silly speech, Obama's two speeches were major - especially the Indonesian one that is in some ways a follow up to his Cairo speech. It is a major outreach to the Muslim world - that Palin and her fellow demagogues want to define as enemies. This was a major foreign policy speech - and certainly more important than knowing that Palin wanted someone to pry with her before the VP debate. (with her "cute" story that when Piper asked if she should pray for her to win, Sarah told her to pray for God to speak through her and Piper told her that would be cheating. This is shades of Angle and O'Donnell. (So, I guess she thinks God wants her to wink at people and make up lies. Is her God really Aqua Buddah?)

23. What is disturbing is after 30 years of these trade deals
Edited on Wed Nov-10-10 02:29 PM by doc03
we still don't have any jobs! I will bet for every job that his trip creates here 10 jobs will be exported to India. Why doesn't he go to South America next and see if he can expand NAFTA some more, that's worked out just dandy hasn't it. It's that old giant sucking sound. This is what I am talking about, watch this video: He sounds like Ronald Reagan.

24. There was nothing said of a trade deal here
As to the trad deals, the fact is that they nee to be renegotiated to include the labor and the environmental provisions that were suppose to be side deals - and weren't.

Even then, you need to look at the global trade BEFORE NAFTA. The fact is that companies were already contracting with companies in other countries even when there were no trade deals. In addition, they are now contracting with countries with which we have no trade deals. Go to your closet and look at the labels on the clothing that you (and your kids or wife if applicable). You will find that almost everything - even from most of the priciest stores is made in places like Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam, various Central and South American countries.

Even without trade agreements this would have happened - as can be seen by the inclusion of Sri Lanka and Vietnam in this list. The reason is that companies that make clothes can legally contract to have them made in these countries and the costs - even with shipping and the needed communications both ways - it is cheaper. Now, you might say - that is unAmerican and the owners of those companies are evil. In fact, they aren't. They each sit looking at their price points versus their competitors and almost all of them are driven to producing where it is cheaper.

In more recent years, customer service and any hot lines have been outsourced. I think some systems development and programming has as well - but I am not certain that is the case.

This is a major structural economic problem. In essence, the labor market is now global. This is as huge a change as when you had the industrial revolution which completely tilted the balance of power to the companies - with laborers becoming easily replace cogs in a wheel. The answer then to get balance was unions. Now, it may well be that in all fields where the labor pool is international, that the union which worked to balance the power of a company when the labor had to come from a relatively small geographical area, no longer has sufficient leverage. Before this they could counter union power by moving or threatening to move to areas of the country with no unions (ie the red states).

I don't really see what the solution is to this. If we still had that production, high tariffs could change the balance sheet enough to keep production here. That however would rise the cost of everything you currently buy that was made with cheaper labor and would make our products non-competitive internationally.

It might be that fair trade laws could be part of the solution by lifting the cost of labor everywhere. Maybe created by tariffs that compensate for countries that exploit laborers. Here, this will still not work. There are many places where the wages relative to the cost of living might be acceptable, but still far below the US.

I frankly do not see an obvious answer - an I have tried to think about it and have read and listened to economists speaking about the problem.

32. we dont have cable
So I didn't realize her shameless plug speech was broadcast.

So, I'm a lttle left out of what's going on.

At the same time, I'm kind of glad because I'm already disgusted and outraged, particularly with the pro-replug, deceitful propaganda we're force fed.

20. They do have workers and those workers spend money in their communities
I also suspect that a portion of Boeing stock is owned by pension plans. Not to mention, there are many people - Democrats included - who own stocks or mutual funds made up of stocks.

What companies do you approve of the President getting people to buy things from?

I think this is an all new record. You came in to crap on this post minutes after it was posted. I love how DU includes the time with the posting. Seriously you look really silly right now. A bunch of pictures with the president dancing and you just could not let it be. Is here some type of condition that some of you have or something?

12. Nice pics OP
Also nice to see people calling folks out on starting the negativity in these types of topics. This is an OP of pictures. When people cannot let go of a post with just pictures of the man then you know they are coming from someplace else. You cannot control hate and disdain. Great pictures.

Since they're there with the intent of forging alliance, it's great to see the joyous smiles.

Making positive causes always has positive effects.

The only way we humans will achieve peace and prosperity is by cooperation...that means building friendships through dialogue, education and sharing beautiful diverse culture. That is also the foundation for economic cooperation.

Thank god the COC knows this. Now, I also want him to strengthen his response to the sick bullies at home--trying to reason with them or giving them what they want is a mistake.

It's slow, --so hard to bear the frustration and impatience--but it's really the only path of real result.

(PS. I just want to add, I myself am terribly impatient and I fall into intense frustration often. Just sayin. )
