37. It's interesting.....
....when I was in Italy in 2004, people would tell us: "We love the American people, we just hate your president." Now, I'm sure it's the opposite. They love our president, but think the American people are a bunch of complainers, whiners, who are never happy, who never have enough.

They are so excited to have him there! We are very lucky here in America, it's just terrible that we take it for granted.

in India. American presidents are very popular in India.
Even Bush-43 is very popular because of his pushing
the nuclear technology pact with India.

19. Not true. There were massive protests when Bush II visited.
"Mass protests await Bush in India"
New Delhi, Feb 27 -

As the hectic efforts are on by the Indian government to give "red carpet" welcome to the US President George W. Bush on his arrival on March 1.

The left parties, the key allies of the government are gearing up to greet Bush with large scale protests and demonstrations across the country.

"The left parties along with many other parties, including Janata Dal (s) and Samajwadi party, would participate in the countrywide protests for three days during the visit of the American President George W. Bush," CPI general secretary Prakash Karat said after inaugurating an "anti-imperialist film festival" here.

He claimed the national capital would witness the biggest ever demonstration on March 2.

Similar agitation programs were planned across state capitals and the different districts across the country, he said.

Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 01:08 AM by golfguru
I read somewhere there were protests for Obama also
on this visit. You can't judge the popularity based
on protests by even 2 million people in a country of 1200 Million people.

Please note that there is complete freedom of press,
speech, peaceful protests and assembly in democratic India.

Edited on Sun Nov-07-10 01:30 AM by golfguru
in a country of 1200 million. I have relatives
and friends in India so I am going by what I heard
from them.

But there is no question Obama is even more popular than Bush.

My main point is every American president visiting India
has received tumultuous reception without exception.
I was actually there during Eisenhower's visit in 1959.

Read about all 6 presidents visits to India here..

33. The given figures ranged from 200,000 to 700,000!
And comparing those numbers to the total population of a country is absurd. OTOH, there were only about 200 cops assigned to "crowd control" in Mumbia for Obama's arrival. And apparently, they did little more than be present.

39. These Obama protests do not overshadow 98% popularity
of US presidents visiting India. Indians do not care
what parties they belong to. They only care that USA
is the worlds oldest democracy, that USA is a superpower
and have a common bond of English language. The largest
circulation English newspaper in the world is Times of India.

and it means nothing. You are missing my main point.
Every visiting US president is overwhelmingly popular in India.
I know this personally. I was a young student during the
Eisenhower visit in 1959. And that was when India was part
of the so called non-aligned nations, with closer ties with
the Soviet Union. Indians in general are crazy about celebrities. US presidents amongst them.

NDTV's reporting that the U.S. is now willing to lift restrictions against the export to India of sensitive nuclear weapons technologies so as to – surprise! – benefit U.S. companies selling same, and that it's probably only because we're in such bad economic shape that we're now willing to do it. "US, India sign deals worth $20 billion," etc.
