If Obama's bow has become a thing, why hasn't Palin flag fiasco?

November 17, 2009 9:11 am ET by Eric Boehlert

If the press is going to robotically follow the lead of the right-wing media and spend time actually dissecting Obama's bow over the weekend before Japan's Japan's Emperor Akihito, and if the press is going to legitimize the notion that perhaps all kinds of (evil) motives can be interpreted by the common act of protocol, and that maybe Americans can learn all sorts of things about how Obama views America's role in the world from the passing action, than why hasn't the press turned its attention to this week's Newsweek's cover which features Sarah Palin in an apparent breach of protocol?

This is just Boy Scout/Girl Scout 101: you simply do not use the United States flag as a casual prop draped over a chair and lean up against for a photo shoot. Ever. And for a politician to do it, and an overtly stars-and-stripes one like Palin, is really rather shocking.

Yet here we are in the media's unofficial Palin Week when all-things Palin are deemed to be hugely significant, and Palin's apparent etiquette gaffe goes mostly unmentioned. Why? Because the press only cares about what right-wing noisemakers are crowing about. (i.e. The bow.)

UPDATED: Palin (writing in the third person) is reportedly upset that Newsweek used the photo, which was from an older Runner's World issue, because it featured her in a running suit. The fact that it featured her apparently disrespecting the flag is of no concern. The media continue to remain mum.

1. Are people *really* comparing Palin to Obama?
Man, that woman has people spooked.

2. No, they're criticizing Obama while giving Palin a pass. I've
pretty much come to expect it, but it's no less disappointing.

3. Not a comment on the "Morning Joe" show today, other than
Mika thinking the cover was sexist :eyes:.

14. They were ripping Palin today throughout the show
and Joe made a comment that the bow was a non-issue. I beleive he even made a comment about the kissing and handholding by Bush as being more objectionable.

No-one on Morning Joe, not even Mika anymore, thinks Palin has what it takes to be president.

16. I sent them an e-mail today.
I used to be a loyal follower, but I am so sick of this Palin worship. Just the fact that they are giving her exposure through all of the time they devote to her. I remember when Mika thought Palin was the best thing going since she was also a working Mother. :eyes:

The show has become less about politics and more like "Entertainment Tonight" or the "Inside Edition" and that is what I wrote them today.

5. Ill be Honest...i dont understand how this "flag" thing is an issue -- its a scenic prop..big deal.
Obama's bow is an obvious sign of respect and i am sure he would be damned either way if he had or hadn't bowed. I am proud he bowed...make the right angry and predictably the msm to talk about.

6. The "flag thing" is a big issue. Like it says in the OP, it's flag etiquette 101
You don't use a flag as a prop. It's disrespect for what the flag is supposed to stand for and she cared more about a "good shot" for a friggin' running magazine than her respect for the flag, and as the sitting Governor?

I know in the overall scheme of things it is easy to say it's just some cloth sewn together, the problem is the IDEAL that the flag represents and it is really an easy thing to do. Bunting is for decorations, NOT the flag.

20. Canada may be less concerned with something that is just a symbol
The fact is that if any Democratic politician used a flag, not properly displayed, we would hear about it for months - especially if it was Obama (where the right questions if it is his flag) or Kerry (who they hate because he told the truth about Vietnam.)

the other is not.

Like why was bushs military record during vietnam more of an issue than some completely random person pulled off the street who likewise did not serve?

13. This isn't much of an issue
a few blowhards and mostly internet bloggers are making it an issue. I don't see "the media" getting all that upset. Discussing it perhaps, because it has come up as an issue, but not really expressing the outrage some seem to believe they are.

not just a mustache, real whiskers, It was obvious she bleached them to show less. That was what she was mad about when she criticized them for showing her 'wrinkles'.

Check out those knees- certainly not the knees we saw on the cover of Newsweek! She cries sexist AFTER she poses in short shorts -- and if you look through these, in some she is bent over AWAY from the camera -- as if an ass upshot or something. Really quite dignified for a C'hristian Feminist.

18. 'Cause she's a REAL American!
True Patriots can use the flag as decoration, wallpaper, clothing or whatever they want and it's OK because their hearts are purified by their true patriotism. Socialist liberal commies, however, are not even fit to look upon the heroic American flag. You got that? Avert your eyes, socialist!

and Comment: I love that Mrs. Palin's book is getting the "attention" it is...one word...BACKFIRE...throwing the McCain campaign team under the bus and being called a liar...its oh so comical!!! That woman does NOT represent what I stand for...never have...never will...

And observation: Maybe she's not mad at the photo...but rather the Headline...

It's FINE to have a flag draped over the back of a chair. Compared to citizens of other advanced countries, Americans tend to wave, venerate, & fetishize our national piece of cloth in a really absurd way, and need to grow the hell up. And it's really jumping the shark for liberals to try and scold a rabid right-winger like Palin for not being enough of a flag-worshipper.

22. Another question:
The people focusing on Obama's bow (republicans) are looking to distract from real issues so they don't get an honest debate. I understand why they want to do that.

Do democrats want to focus on issues or not?

Do we think it's more important to talk about the wars, health care, the economy, civil rights? Or would we also rather be focused on the number of degrees in the angle of a person's bow, or whether a photo can or cannot include a picture of a flag, and if so, does the flag need to be attached to a flag pole?

Judging from the posts on DU over the last few days, I suspect we'd rather be talking about the finer points of etiquette among the ruling classes rather than survival for the rest of us.
