1. What exactly are the details - do we know yet? They were also in
support of the public option idea before we knew the details.

2. I am also somewhat supportive of it. Doesn't mean it isn't crap.
I have no doubt that it is better than nothing, hence it is a net good thing.

If I was in congress I would vote for it.

That doesn't mean that on an internet discussion board I am required to get weak-kneed over it.

10. Huh? Did I Ask You To Get Weak Kneed?
Didn't know I was requiring that, or anyone was for that matter.

3. Your own headline says it all..."seem to be somewhat supportive"
Hardly a ringing endorsement

11. But They Don't Hate It As Some Here Do
They think it's workable. That's important.

4. Its too early to label anyone anything
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 01:20 PM by Oregone
It could be an expansion of a successful and popular socialistic insurance entity, or it could be riddled with enough exceptions to firewall enough people as needed to make it useless. Time will tell

12. I Agree
I'd like to see more details. If the expansion of medicare works, I can see it expanded MORE. This could be a great foot in the door.

16. it's all in the details
and it is still an amorphous entity that has the potential to turn into a lot of different things.

5. None of us have any idea what is going on.
We will just have to wait and see.

6. No.
Unlike folks on the sidelines who rant, moan, and whine...they are in positions of responsibility and are simply acting rationally. A "no brainer" really. Dean, Weiner et al. know it's to take a good deal when it's offered. This is the best chance at health reform available in a generation. Let's not let it slip aways because we can't get ALL of what we want.

7. My self interest
I'm a laid off 55 year old facing economic oblivion for the rest of my life, so this new version of expanding medicare down to age 55 is wonderful - for me. It does make me feel a lot like "I got mine, so screw you", as far as people below age 55 goes.

However, as this gets implemented and prevents 55 and ups from economic ruin, it will be that much easier to make the medicare age cut off lower and lower over time.

I think this new development will be a Godsend for people in my demographic, but hopefully the under 55's will not go through the dropped insurance preexisting bullshit that should be at the core of every American's interest in Health Care Reform. There should be no more medical related bankruptcies in America EVER AGAIN!

-90% Jimmy

People younger than me - forgive my selfishness, but Medicare down to 55 would really really help me survive these times without losing my life savings and all my stuff!

8. If I can, as a 30 year old married guy, buy into the same thing congress does for me and my wife...
...then thats good enough for me.

Absofuckinglutely. That's what I'm thinking. This could be quite the foot in the door.

having similar trouble since my dad got sick and lost his job.

that no man's land of 50-65 is scary.

for my own selfish interest -I want to see that loop hole covered while I'm still 30. haha

13. Dean expresses concerns today to Plum Line.
"Dean also confirmed various details about the deal that he’d learned in direct conversations with Senators involved in the discussions — detail that news orgs had mostly attributed to anonymous sources. Dean’s general support for the bill could give it a boost among progressives who say it falls short of real reform.

Some detail from Dean:

* In one provision that liberals will dislike, Dean said he’d been told that the Medicare buy-in for people 55-64 would not have subsidies, potentially making the buy in unaffordable for many intended recipients. Dean said that if this isn’t fixed in conference negotiations, it could be a deal-breaker.

“That’s a huge problem that may tip this into being not real reform,” Dean said."

15. My Understanding Is There WILL Be Subsidies But They Don't Kick In For A Few Years
Yes, a potential problem, but something that seems easily fixed.
