Politico declares: Grayson Ad Backfires!
That's the headline, anyway. The story just has some schmuck pointing out that the ad is misleading. Dan Webster is not really in the Taliban, I guess.

The only hint of "backfiring" in the story is the unsupported claim that the ad has "created an opening" for Webster. An opening for what? Last I saw Webster, he was declining to comment on his anti-woman record. Some opening. Some backfiring. Go Grayson!

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0910/42818.html#ixzz10q3E7X8r

Rep. Alan Grayson's attempt to equate his Republican challenger with the Taliban is having a big impact — just not the one Grayson may have hoped.

In an ad, Grayson's campaign calls Republican Daniel Webster a "religious fanatic" — a charge it supports with video in which Webster seems to encourage wives to "submit" to their husbands.

But FactCheck.org says the narrative crafted by the Florida Democrat's campaign distorts what Webster was actually saying.

(...)

The ad has created an opening for Webster's campaign, which significantly trails Grayson's in fundraising.

2. It is disappointing
His ad edited Webster to be saying almost the exact opposite of what he actually did say. A Breitbart-worthy job. I hold Grayson to a higher standard.

7. you might not like Grayson
this ad seems to be what Grayson is. He obviously is not going for PolitiFact's approval, or Politico's approval, or the approval of whatever Dem leader comes out and denounces him for it (Steny Hoyer maybe?).

I like it. I used to not like this stuff, but now I do. I heard some RW asshole crying about the ad this morning and I said, thank you Alan Grayson.

12. Of Course Not.
But there's a lot more conxtext.

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord,

Ephesians 5-22

I want Webster to elaborate on what that verse means to him.

13. Did you read either the politifact or factcheck analyses?
Full quote:

"Don't pick the ones that say, 'she should submit to me.' That's in the Bible, but pick the ones you're supposed to do (laughs). So instead (laughs) that you'd love your wife -- even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it ... and, as opposed to 'wives submit yourself to your own husband.' She can pray that if she wants to, but don't you pray it."

15. That Is One Of The Most Controversial Passages In The New Testament
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 11:06 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Webster danced around it. He is suggesting women should submit to their husbands however husbands shouldn't explicitly demand it.

As an aside I have had this discussion many times with fundamentalists. I usually say "when I get married my wife and I will be equal." Their retort is "that might be fine for you but it's a violation of scripture."

20. I Knew That
the ad ties this quote to the Taliban when it came from the Christian Bible.

Maybe the Koran says it more, or not at all!

23. Here's the video of the context
Here is the link to Grayson's interview with Contessa Brewer with the full context. I'm a new poster so hopefully it will be a hot link.

It is disappointing because it's so untruthful. As Contessa challenges him, if Grayson disagrees with his record, he should talk about that. Not lie.
