US walks out on Ahmadinejad's UN speech (stale maneuver)

-snip-

The provocative comments prompted the U.S. delegation to walk out of Ahmadinejad's U.N. speech, where he also blamed the U.S. as the power behind U.N. Security Council sanctions against Iran for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that can be used as fuel for electricity generation or to build nuclear weapons.

Delegations from all 27 European Union nations followed the Americans out along with representatives from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Costa Rica, an EU diplomat said.

------------------------

I've always thought that countries that walk out on a speaker are acting juvenile.

this walking out statement is no longer working. it has turned to dogma, which ain't good.

the participants at the UN need a new tune.

this post is not about Iran, it is about 'walking out' and how it has become stale.

1. I approve of the move. It's symbolic of our lack of respect for I'madinnerjacket. nt

9. How so? I cannot fathom how "dogma" applies here.
Edited on Fri Sep-24-10 11:20 AM by ClarkUSA
"Dogma is the established belief or doctrine held by a religion, ideology or any kind of organization: it is authoritative and not to be disputed, doubted, or diverged from."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogma

That's not what happening here.

Anyway, I don't want to argue semantics with you. I just wanted to register my approval of any move that sidelines Iran on the global stage while they are acting like bad players.

10. Did the US delegation walk out when Kruschiev banged his shoe on
the podium and declared "We will bury you"?

No.

They acted like grownups, listened to what he said, then laughed about it in the press later.

Sticking your fingers in your ears and going "la la la I can't hear you" never impresses anyone about your seriousness.

16. That proves my point. Such an act is not UN or US diplomatic "dogma" at all.

You've got to be kidding me. That Iranian lunatic dictator blamed America for 9/11 in the city where the atrocity occurred. And you're blaming the US delegation for not wanting to sit through his verbal garbage? Now I've heard everything. :puke:

As a New Yorker, I totally disagree with your POV on this.

In all "seriousness", if you were to voice your opinions aloud to New Yorkers working near Ground Zero, I'm pretty sure your ears would blister with the responses you'd get.

3. Just because walking out is over-used doesn't mean it should never be used. It was appropriate here

12. Yes, it would be too dangerous for anyone to sit through something that
challenges the base assumptions used for the war we started.

6. 9-11 "truther", a 9-11 conspiracy theorist.
The people who blame mini-nukes, GWB, Jews, etc. for 9-11.

"twoofer" is a portmanteau of truther and woo woo.

Ahmadinejad blamed the Jews for 9-11. That's why everybody walked out.

But I think you already know all that.

11. No, he didn't. But you wouldn't know that, having walked out yourself.
He put up three different theories - that it was Israel, that it was Bush causing it to happen, that it was Bush allowing it to happen, pointing out how the official story is just as unreliable as those conspiracy theories.

But when have you ever given a half-thought for truth.

which you want others to hear.

You may have a great future on Fox News.

How much credit are YOU going to give him.

Now, the UN looks at us and wonders why we are so wedded to our own mythology that we can't even bear to hear something that conflicts with it, no matter how silly it may be. They think, if the US is SOOO freaked out, maybe there's something to what he's saying.

As said above, walking out was childish. Responding, reacting, to his provocation simply makes him more powerful than he really is.

So much better for the US delegation to have sat there, quietly chuckling, shaking their heads - as we actually used to see when the Soviets would start going off the deep end, then THEY would be the ones to stomp out.

Get some fucking perspective.

EDIT: I don't know where the question mark after 'clergy' came from.

28. You miss the broader point .............
When your sworn enemy stands up and walks out without listening, and then says you're full of shit, they lose credibility and bolster your own position by default.

It was a misguided, misjudged, and just plain stupid to do.

18. I hated the Bush regime
I believe they ignored warnings and are responsible for allowing 9-11 to happen because of stupidity and ego. I believe they were looking for any excuse to invade Iraq. I believe they are evil. I don't believe they caused it or any of the other truther comments.

I believe Ahmadinejad is evil, stupid and lots of other bad things. I am glad they walked out. The only better thing would have been thing would have been throwing cream pies in his face-just kidding. I also wouldn't mind them making fun of him in the press.

23. Walking out was childish....
Acting like an adult, is to listen to all the information before giving a response. Running away is not an option.
Any U.S. military move into Iran would be "catastrophically stupid" and "unleash a conflagration like we've never heard of before."

Resistance to a military strike on Iran is growing in Congress, but it needs your help! Sign the petition to Congress below - No War with Iran! House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said recently that she would introduce legislation to stop such a strike, so our demand is beginning to get through.
