Gov. Paterson: Terrorist shouldn't be tried in NY
Gov. Paterson: 9/11 mastermind Kalid Shaikh Mohammed shouldn't be tried on NY soil, near ground zero

Gov. Paterson on Monday joined the chorus of critics questioning the government's plan to try Kalid Shaikh Mohammed and four other accused 9/11 terrorists in New York.

"This is not a decision that I would have made," the governor said when asked about the upcoming federal trial of KSM and his four underlings.

"Our country was attacked on its own soil on Sept. 11, 2001, and New York was very much the epicenter of that attack," Paterson said after an appearance at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new CUNY campus in East Harlem.

"Over 2,700 lives were lost," he went on. "It's very painful; we're still having trouble getting over it. We still haven't been able to rebuild that site, and having those terrorists tried so close to the attack is going to be an encumbrance on all of New Yorkers."

Paterson said he had been made aware six months ago the White House decision was possible and has been preparing for it.

He promised the feds "would get my fullest cooperation."

Pressed about the validity of military tribunals, Paterson said he has been too preoccupied with contentious budget negotiations in Albany to pay attention to the subtleties of law.

"I've been a little busy lately and I haven't had a chance to read the material that would have informed me as to whether or not it would have been better for this to be a military tribunal or whether it should have been a civilian trial," he said. "The decision is not mine to make."

7. I think Paterson kinda
screwed himself and PO may have pointed it out. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on with the "media", Paterson, and the White House.

I know PO doesn't play the race card and Paterson brings it up too much.

Yeah but that doesn't stop him from yammering on about it like an idiot. Paterson seems best as a SNL joke.

5. He's welcome to his opinion, BUT...
the one argument I haven't heard yet is that NYers have a right to fill the jury box. (I am assuming that this would be a jury trial).
If a trial (of sorts) were held in a military setting or even in another locale, they would not be represented. That would be an injustice in and of itself.

I've tried my best ot see the positive side of Paterson. But after pillaging SUNY, his horrible mismanagement of the state government, and now this, I'm seriously thinking about campaigning for NOT HIM.

24. Stephanie Millers father was a prosecuter at the Hague during
WWII.....guess where they prosecuted the Nazi's? Yep, that's right they prosecuted them in Nuremburg,Germany!

Why not prosecute these criminal thugs where they committed the crime?

The 6th Ammendment of the Constitution....

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed,

In * and Repug Congress haste to attack Afghanastan and Iraq they forgot one thing....they forgot to declare War.....just because they say it was doesn't make it so. They fucked up and America continues to pay the price.....

27. Nice one Patterson. RW talking points to get you reelected?
A good friend of mine almost lost her sister in the attacks but we all agree it should be a fair trial held in NY, to prove that our system of law is better then any terrorist can dream up. Nice way not to prove that to the world.

28. Right! That would be like Israel capturing some NAZI and trying him in Tel Aviv.

Oh, wait....

I don't get it. When the DC sniper was captured, the states began fighting for first crack at prosecuting him. When Saudi Arabia tried and executed terrorists wanted for attacks on Americans, we were angry they weren't turned over to us.

Now they DON'T want to try people for crimes in their state?

Good time to go on a crime spree in New York, I guess.
