Reid to schedule ‘Don’t Ask’ vote next week

Reid to schedule ‘Don’t Ask’ vote next week

The Washington Blade has learned that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) intends to schedule a vote next week on major defense budget legislation that contains “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal language, regardless of any objection from members of the U.S. Senate.

A senior Democratic leadership aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Reid met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday to inform the Republican leader that the fiscal year 2011 defense authorization bill will come to the Senate floor the week of Sept. 20.

The aide said Senate leadership is anticipating the Senate won’t have unanimous consent to bring the legislation to the floor, so 60 votes will be necessary to end a filibuster and move forward with debate on the bill.

“We are going to take it the floor next week to see where the votes are,” the aide said.

1. Good for Harry Reid
He was under a lot of pressure from both sides and is doing the right thing.

Let's hope he can cobble together the sixty votes.

4. actually in this case that is a valid question
it was added to the budget and is supposed to only need 60 votes to change it, which removing DADT would be a change. That is the understanding I had of what the committee vote several months ago did.

13. there isn't supposed to be able to be a filibuster here
that is the point. The vote in committee that we had putting this in the markup was supposed to make it so that a filibuster would be required to remove DADT repeal, not to add DADT repeal.

which they might do.

Edited to add that that's not a reason not to bring it up.

to take it out.

5. Good for Harry Reid
He's doing the right thing. And I think that there is an excellent chance to get the 60 votes for passage...I know Joseph Lieberman is a scumbag almost all of the time, but he's good on our issues and he said he support DADT repeal. And I think a few other Republicans will vote for repeal....Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

Thanks, Senator Reid.

I think we could even get Scott Brown. 2012 isn't all that far away. And he is a Senator from Massachusetts. Even though the voters there will recitfy a mistake last year...

17. I think his vote is in play
He voted against the DADT repeal in committee BUT then voted for the full defense authorization bill with the repeal language. A liberal state with a pro-gay rights culture, plus a little pressure could definitely deliver his vote in the affirmative.

14. you can't have it both ways
either Obama does or he doesn't control the timing of these votes. You and others have repeatedly told us, in no uncertain terms, that Obama is powerless to control the timing of these votes, so you can't now turn around and give him credit for the timing of this vote. BTW I will be consistent. I am glad to see this vote and hope that Obama lobbies for the votes for this to pass.

You, in a thread about timing of the Congressional vote on DADT, stated "so what, two co equal branches of government sometimes disagree" That certainly is quite different from demanding Obama get credit for the vote happening now.

Edited on Mon Sep-13-10 06:34 PM by dsc
you can't say on one day, that the House schedule is the House's business but today that the senate's is Obama's unless you are an Obama at all costs supporter. Then I guess you can. On edit I make a bold prediction. If DADT repeal passes Obama will deserve credit in your eyes but if it fails all of the sudden the Senate will go back to being co equal and Reid will get all the blame.

27. Blame for what, exactly?
You run around looking for attacks on the POTUS where there are none. I know damn well that the OP wasn't an attack on the Administration. You're the one who's trying to make this into something it's not. GetEqual and Dan Choi have been working tirelessly to get this done. I'm giving credit where credit is due.

30. Actually, I don't care who you give credit to.
You can give credit to President Obama for the sun rising every day, it doesn't effect me. But, if I think you're wrong about an issue that does effect me, I'll challenge you every time. I'm not sure what that's "telling" you about me and I don't really care. So "spare me" a reply.

You'd think by now they'd get a clue. I remember when I didn't even know what a filibuster was...but after countless times the Repubs have done it, I know it well and what ends up happening to good bills because of it.
