Sen. Charles Grassley still popular despite political hubbub, according to Iowa Poll
Sen. Charles Grassley's approval among Iowans has so far endured this fall's turbulent environment for elected officials, the new Des Moines Register Iowa Poll shows.

The five-term Republican's approval held steady at 57 percent since September, while approval for other statewide officeholders declined.

"There are a lot of leaders and members of Congress that would like to bottom out at 57 percent job approval," said Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of the national Rothenberg Political Report.

"When you are talking job approval approaching 60 percent, in this day and age with the mood of the electorate as it is, you're talking about someone who is stunningly popular among the voters."

However, only 39 percent of Iowans rate Grassley positively for his role in federal health care reform, his most prominent role in the Senate this year.

Iowans' dim view of Grassley's leadership on Congress' top domestic priority does not appear to threaten him politically as he looks to the 2010 election.

1. Don't blame me
or anyone else in the Iowa forum. With all due respect to the four announced opponents to him in '10, none of them are particularly strong candidates at this time, although Conlin has more name recognition that the others. But there's still a long way to go and hopefully, all of us who despise grassley and his extremist views can keep spreading the word about how lousy he is and get him unseated.

2. He brings the pork. Simple as that.
You have to either be pretty damned incompetent or caught up in a national trend to get kicked out of the Senate.

5. What?!
Are you saying all Iowans, his constituents, are brain dead? If so, then I guess we aren't qualified to vote in any election ever. Except we went blue last year, we have a Democratic Governor and legislature, three out of our five congressional districts are Dems, and Tom Harkin is an Iowan. You might want to reconsider the wording of your post. Oh yeah, one more thing, we allow gay marriage Iowa. We, the constituents of Grassley.

6. If Iowans afflict the nation an elderly nutter who's on the verge of senility

and who stumbles with barely coherent sentences, then you're going to get a LOT of that. And it'll be deserved.

Crikey. Retire the guy already before he becomes even more of an embarrassment.

7. no... didn't mean it that way
and I realize I shouldn't have used the term "constituents". What I meant to say, is that those folks who did vote for him before and willing to vote for him again are "brain dead", figuratively speaking.

8. Ok. Thanks
As I said in another post, there are some of us working hard to unseat grassley. It is not going to be an easy task but it is still early enough that maybe the word will be spread by election day 2010.

4. Not surprising
Grassley always seems likable. He's conservatism with a smile.
