Obama to Republicans: ‘Drop the Blockade’
By Annie Lowrey 8/30/10 2:43 PM

Speaking in the Rose Garden this afternoon, President Obama asked Congressional Republicans to stop blocking measures to aid the economic recovery and lower the unemployment rate. For the past year, Republicans have repeatedly stalled or killed job-saving or job-creating measures, including ones to extend unemployment benefits, keep local government employees at work, help states close their budget gaps and cut taxes for small businesses.

Obama said his administration is considering new measures to help gin up the stalled recovery:

{My} administration remains focused, every single day, on pushing this economy forward, repairing the damage that’s been done to the middle class over the past decade, and promoting the growth we need to get our people back to work.

So, as Congress prepares to return to session, my economic team is hard at work in identifying additional measures that could make a difference in both promoting growth and hiring in the short term, and increasing our economy’s competitiveness in the long term. Steps like extending the tax cuts for the middle class that are set to expire this year. Redoubling our investment in clean energy and R&D. Rebuilding more of our infrastructure for the future. Further tax cuts to encourage businesses to put their capital to work creating jobs here in the United States. And I’ll be addressing these proposals in further detail in the days and weeks to come.

But he focused on berating Republicans for obstructionism:

{This small jobs} bill has been languishing in the Senate for months, held up by a partisan minority that won’t even allow it to go to a vote. That makes no sense. This bill is fully paid for. It won’t add to the deficit. And there is no reason to block it besides pure partisan politics. Small business owners and the communities that rely on them, they don’t have time for political games. They shouldn’t have to wait any longer. In fact, just this morning, a story showed that small businesses have put hiring and expanding on hold while waiting for the Senate to act on this bill. Simply put: holding this bill hostage is directly detrimental to our economic growth.

So I ask Senate Republicans to drop the blockade. I know we’re entering election season. But the people who sent us here expect us to work together to get things done and improve this economy.

The problem is, Republicans have no real incentive to drop the blockade, no matter how much Democrats wish they do. If the economy starts improving due to Democratic policies, that’s better for Democrats. If the economy falters, that’s better for Republicans. Voters might despise both parties for all the partisan bickering stalling important measures, such as Medicaid funding or aid for the 99ers. But they’ll vote out the party in power and, therefore, responsible.

1. Just put it into "D" and DRIVE over their little "blockade"
How about giving the GOP a little taste of what it was like for us in 2000-08?

I'm not in the mood to compromise with the likes of liars, criminals, and bullshit artists.

2. How could that be done, seriously? Remember, we have a few
Dems who aren't cooperating either.

11. there we go
or maybe issue some executive signing statements/orders that GWB was so fond of?

I'm no fan of Dubya's methods. But if such statement/order would mean more jobs for Americans -- then fuck the Repukes and their miserable whining. They need a bitter dose of their own medicine.

13. Yes, Obama has no power
Obama is impotent. It is not like the presidency has any real power. I mean the mayor of Chicago, now that's power. But Obama? I mean he literally has to get permission from Boehner BEFORE he takes a crap. Otherwise, the rethuglicans would filibuster the White House budgetary allotment of T.P.

THESE are the things poor little Obama has to contend with.

14. Simple majority
Under George W. Bush, Republicans managed to ram tax cuts, oil drilling, trade authority, and much else through on simple majority votes (done at 3 am.)

5. They should be working up measures that can be done
w/o the Congress or with majority votes...

6. Can you think of any measures that can be accomplished
by Obama alone? I'd love to support whatever that might be.

8. Nope, not my job.
That's for his staff to be researching and working out...But I'm sure there must be something that can be budget only added on to some other existing program, which would allow for reconcilliation...

I'm not trying to be flip...this is where repubs differ from us...they'd be looking into finding ways to affect their agenda ...we always stick with Congress while the right runs for the lawyers or broad readings of law...

7. The real problem is there are several (D) going along with (R) to do this....
Edited on Mon Aug-30-10 09:35 PM by denimgirly
We know republicans are not going to lift this blockade...The real strategy to get over it is to not ask politely (again) because it has not worked the last 1,000 times of asking nicely...its time to break out the whipping stick and look to the TRAITOR Democrats who aresiding with the repubs to make this happen. Work as a team and get this thing out and not wait...or should i say...the real reason they are taking their time is because they are Looking for EXCUSES....If the democrats want to save their ass they better find every known trick to get this stuff passed or they have only themselves to blame because seriously republcians can only benefit by holding it off.

9. All this proves to me is Republicans are Clever..Democrats are Purposely Ignorant.
Edited on Mon Aug-30-10 09:42 PM by denimgirly
If a minority can hold congress hostage this easily then we have a party of dummies in Washington. We've known for the past 2 years that republicans have been playing this game endlessly.

The latter part of the saying goes: "...fool me twice...shame on me."...What is the saying for fooling me 1000 previous times?

Get tough democrats...or prepare for a bloodbath in 3 months! Whining about republicans blocking things is just that...Whining! DO SOMETHING! You're the gawdamn majority!

10. I'm glad Pres Obama is speaking up on this.
The Rs are purposely holding up legislation that would promote hiring and get the economy going. Having failed at governing, they exist now only to obstruct the Democrats' agenda. Partisan politics over the well-being of America.
