Update on House race in California's 3rd District.

Lungren facing strong challenge

Ami Bera, 45, a doctor from Elk Grove (Sacramento County) and the son of immigrants from India, has said that the three-term incumbent (Lungren), a former state attorney general and Long Beach congressman, is no longer interested in serving his constituents and just wants another term in office.

<snip>

When Lungren voted against a bill to extend unemployment benefits, saying it cost too much, Bera said it was hypocritical for Lungren to call himself a deficit hawk, because he supports continuing the Bush tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year.

Bera, who emphasizes his outsider status, said he is not satisfied with the Democratic leadership, either. He has been vocal in his claims that the health care reform enacted earlier this year did not go far enough in challenging insurance companies, helping him gain the support of doctors across the nation.

Some Republicans are on the endangered list.

Ami Bera, a first-time congressional candidate, campaigns along the tree-lined streets of the Sacramento suburbs, toting a water bottle and shouldering the hopes of Democrats nationwide.

There is more at stake than personal ambition: A victory could help his party keep control of the House.

<snip>

Lungren may be the most endangered. He is the only Republican House member in the country lagging behind his Democratic challenger in fundraising.
