Mo. Opening Bridge Funded By Federal Stimulus Funds

POSTED: 12:06 pm CDT August 16, 2010

TUSCUMBIA, Mo. -- State officials are opening a mid-Missouri bridge that was the first construction project in the nation begun with federal stimulus funds.

Crews began work on the bridge in Tuscumbia on Feb. 17, 2009, just minutes after President Barack Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus package into law. The bridge carries traffic on Missouri 17 over the Osage River about 30 miles southwest of Jefferson City. It replaces a bridge that was nearly 80 years old.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said Monday's ribbon-cutting was to be followed by a celebration organized by citizens of Tuscumbia and Miller County

1. Cool. Let me guess, all the Repubs that voted against the stimulus will hasten
to take credit for it. Sigh.

3. I agree; a splashy televised opening would be nice. Would never
happen in this climate.

4. Some people underate the stimulus since it wasn't a WPA style
progam run through federal government, but these and other projects are proof this is really creating jobs.
