Does our party have a propaganda machine (where is it?)
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 04:05 PM by Rosa Luxemburg
Do we have a propaganda machine (or has its wheel come off?).

We need a pack of Rottweilers on every show, program, in the newspapers, spinning to their hearts content, sitting watching over the Associated Press.

We need to send packs out to the local radio stations, TV stations, with a barrage of letters to the editors. Every single lie that comes out of Fox News needs to be rebutted word by word.

Perhaps we can make some big issues stand out in this election like the GOP privatization of social security, medicare. Put the fear into the voters. All we do is talk about Catfood.

Who is the media person? Are they at the beach?

1. We could have - his name is George Lakoff
He had much to teach the Democratic Party about framing - but the party's higher-ups disregarded it.

So now we're stuck with the same old failed strategies and no Howard Dean to help energize the base.

6. Hell, to answer honestly, I'm sure we have some good media people but they're far outnumbered
by snarky journalists on all sides. No matter what gets said by our people nobody listens. They'd rather listen to what the snarky media says ABOUT what our folks say. Just look around DU and see how many people actually read what Obama actually says as opposed to what CNN SAYS he says.

It's a losing battle even among DU's supposed "Democrats."

7. NO
There isn't a strategist worth a plugged nickle in Democratic leadership.

I happen to know that after the election theft of 2000, a group of lefty bigwigs in Hollywood laid plans for a Democratic wurlitzer, doing opposition research and pushback. Something scared them, bigtime. They abruptly abandoned the plan. Threatened with blackmail? Blacklisting? Trouble? Probably, in one degree or another. The principles in this group were big-time Hollywood names -- so big you would think they are untouchable. But they blinked.

There are two major entities that fight back. Mediamatters.org, and FAIR.org. If we want to help them hold the line, support is essential.

12. Yes, you are
Our propaganda would be really good, if we had any.

It's like fighting fire with fire. It works. It educates, informs and inspires.

The RW propaganda sucks and is full of lies. You really don't think that ours would be full of lies, do you?

17. I'd like to know what the truth is regarding Social Security.
I have heard promises about privatization, but not about cuts.

That is the sort of thing I am thinking about.

13. Well, Do You Have Billions In Corporate Dollars To Devote To Liberal Causes?
If so, I can easily start a propaganda machine for you.

That's the advantage of adverstising. It is a way to funnel money to Fox News without any limits. Ever wonder why Fox News makes so much even though their "news" sucks?

23. You know and I know...I wonder why the Democratic Party does not know that...
The GOP has always had more effective control of media and does a better job with spin and image- they manage to be good salesmen despite having nothing to sell...

19. Nope, and we've sorely needed one for years.
Under the guidance of Lee Atwater, the repukes began a crusade that continues today and we've never had anything that remotely resembles it. One thing you have to give the R's credit for is they've spent years researching, organizing and then spreading their hateful gospel. For some reason we've never been able to counter them effectively. I think it's because we tend to think Americans are smarter than they are. We think "everyone" knows that Sarah Palin is dumb as a stick, or "everyone" knows Fox news is a republican propaganda machine, or "everyone" knows that Rush/Sean/Glenn/Bill/ are just saying those things to get ratings..they don't mean them. ..and the list goes on.

It's true that Dems, for the most part, are better educated and more politically savvy, but in order to move this country in the direction we need to go, we need a propaganda arm that at least as effective as the R's...but I fear we are already so far behind, that it will be years before we can catch up.

We've always underestimated the value of a great soundbite/slogan/talking point/bumper sticker.

21. Disunity among the Dems makes effective propaganda
unlikely to impossible.

The Repukes hone messages and EVERYONE sticks to them.

The Dems write script and the quibbling begins...

Imo our lack of solidarity is our greatest weakness.
