Fox News Poll Regarding the Mosque reveals that...
Edited on Sat Aug-14-10 11:48 AM by Vicar In A Tutu
...a majority think it's perfectly within the rights of the owners to build the structure. The Republican ranters are going to punk themselves if they carry on as they are.

Credit to www.fivethirtyeight.com for pointing this out:

"The only poll to have gotten the distinction right, believe it or not, is the one from Fox News. They asked two separate questions about the planned development. First, they asked:

A group of Muslims plans to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center a few blocks from the site of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City. Do you think it is appropriate to build a mosque and Islamic center near ground zero, or do you think it would be wrong to do so?

Only 30 percent of respondents said "appropriate", while 64 percent said "wrong" -- consistent with the apparent unpopularity of the mosque in other polls.

But Fox also followed up with this question:

Regardless of whether you think it is appropriate to build a mosque near ground zero, do you think the Muslim group has the right to build a mosque there, or don’t they have that right?

Here, the numbers were nearly reversed: 61 percent of respondents, including 69 percent of independents and 57 percent of Republicans, said the developers had the right to build the mosque; 34 percent said they did not."

2. Hardly a happy result
Okay, a majority of Fox viewers know the place is allowed under the first amendment.
Nearly the same majority don't care though and think it's "wrong."

In other words; 61% of Fox Viewers think Muslims should be denied their first-amendment rights.

4. It's not a poll of Fox News viewers. It's a random phone poll..
64% of those polled said that they do have the right to build there, which implies that they should be allowed to do build there.. One can easily believe that and feel that it is inappropriate for them to do so.

3. It's all about GOTV - Get Out The Vote
of their nutcase base. They need a massive turnout of pissed off Black and Mexican hating whites in order to make any semblance of a come back this year. Disregard whether or not it's the truth. That's irrelevant. They're just motivating their base.

5. It's a fundamental, constitutional right to build a community center with one room for prayer.
A show of hands is irrelevent whether it's in favor of it or not.

6. Obama is doing the right thing here...
...but I really think Nate and anyone else who tries to argue this is going to play well or even just be approval-neutral are just dreaming.

This will be a short term negative coming right before an election.

At minimum it fires up the conservatives and teabaggers even more (like few issues could), and probably doesn't really motivate people on our side to vote. Sure, here at DU most of us appreciate the President taking the proper stand on the issue - but we were going to vote anyway.

And to add my purely anecdotal evidence - with all the problems swirling around, I have seen few issues that generate such overwhelming opposition as this mosque. Yes, I know it's a manufactured BS story, but the fact remains that commanding majorities oppose this.
