Jay Bookman has me choking with laughter: Is the IL GOP really that scared of mutant terrorists?
The Obama administration is seriously studying the use of a prison 150 miles from Chicago as a site to hold inmates now imprisoned at Guantanamo. The move is being embraced by Illinois Democrats, but GOP House members from Illinois have signed a letter to the president opposing the move: http://blogs.ajc.com/jay-bookman-blog/2009/11/16/is-gop-terrified-really-that-scared-of-mutant-terrorists/

That raises a question: Are these guys really craven cowards, or are they merely willing to play craven cowards in an attempt to gain political advantage? Do they really think that Chicago, “The City of Big Shoulders,” has become Chicago, the City of Frightened Whiners?

In fact, if you embrace the attitude reflected in that letter, we ought to just quit fighting al Qaida altogether — that way, maybe they won’t be mad at us anymore.

Personally, the most charitable explanation I can think of is that the GOP has gotten al Qaida and the Muslim Brotherhood confused with the evil Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants. They seem to think that Islamic terrorists can melt steel prison bars by staring at them, that they can shape-shift themselves right out of federal Supermax custody.

Even as political theater, this strikes me as a loser. The American people do not want leaders who treat them as cowards.

1. The GOP opposes anything and everything coming from the Obama Administration
Federal or State level, it makes no difference, they all get their opposition orders from the same place.

2. The prison is in a republican district.
where unemployment is so high the town next to the prison is dying. (according to the media) If Obama put the prisoners there, that would mean a state prison would be turned into a federal prison and that would mean it would be opened up to more than just a few minimum security prisoners that it houses now. It would mean employment not only to those in that part of Illinois but possibly also to those close by in Iowa and perhaps even Wisconsin. The GOP know this would reflect in the elections to come if this worked out for the good of the area.

Personally, I am not a big fan of prisons and regret that Illinois has become so dependent on them for employment. We have grown too accustomed to them and think nothing when we drive past one on our way to somewhere. They seem to dot our country side. I know there is a need for prisons but sometimes I think laws are passed just to fill the ones we have. Especially since the running of them have been mostly privatized.

"strong defense" my nonexistent bollocks. Ever since 9/11, everything they've had to say to the people has been basically

"Home of the brave?" For me, the #1 symbol of the dominant "homeland security" mentality of the Bush era was the sight of all of Boston going into lockdown over a promo stunt for the fucking Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie.
