Former Rep. Rob Simmons is officially back in the Senate race, but even his most ardent supporters are wary of his chances of winning the Republican nomination over former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon.
“I would be thrilled if he could pull it off, but I’m realistic about his chances in light of Linda McMahon’s willingness to spend her own fortune to buy media, campaign materials, her own brochures,” said Michael Botelho, a Connecticut Republican and Simmons supporter.
Although boosted by a Thursday endorsement from the Hartford Courant, some of Simmons’s most supportive followers aren’t publicly confident about his chances now that he’s officially back in the Senate race. Simmons re-entered the race Tuesday by declaring his candidacy at a local debate, just five days after he went on television with a self-titled “public service announcement” reminding voters that he is still on the Aug. 10 GOP primary ballot.
Former Rep. Nancy Johnson (R-Conn.) said she’s glad Simmons got back in the race but was judicious about his prospects.
