Buckle up, Mr. President, here we go!

DETROIT (AP) -- Don't say President Barack Obama isn't dutiful and law-abiding.

When Obama toured a General Motors assembly plant Friday, he was invited to test drive a battery-powered Chevrolet Volt inside the cavernous facility.

He looked beseechingly to his top aides, including press secretary Robert Gibbs, all of whom shook their heads. Obama appealed to the chief of his Secret Service detail, who threw up his hands in resignation.

The smiling president got in, buckled his seat belt and proceeded to drive - drum roll, please - 10 feet, and probably not above 2 mph, as news cameras clicked away.

"I hope it has an air bag," Gibbs said.

Obama, who almost never gets to drive, pronounced the ride "pretty smooth."

Or put it in reverse by mistake. Or said something really stupid. Or wiped a boogie on the dash.

4. Good job, Mr. President
Now, it's too bad that car is going to cost about 40K which is out of the price range of most middle class hard working people. If you can get GM to cut the price in half as well as enjoy the drive yourself, I will indeed deem you thew new Messiah because that would be a miracle.

9. That car has no chance of being succesful.
40k for something that has a range of 40 miles on battery = FAIL

24. You keep posting that spam in every thread about the Volt.
The range of that vehicle exceeds 40 miles, as it is NOT powered by battery only.

You need to either educate yourself, or brush up on your reading comprehension.

13. As a pre-condition of the federal loan guarantee auto workers were forced
to take a pay cut to $16.00 per hour for new hires. Notice that we didn't demand the same pre-condition of the banking thieves. How many $40,000 automobiles could you afford on a $32,000 annual income?

19. Remember the first microwaves & VCR's? It didn't take long until they
became affordable for the people you speak of. I paid nearly a thousand bucks for my first microwave, and now you can pick 'em up for under fifty bucks. Are you "honestly" suggesting that this president should determine what a car manufacturer charges for its products?

15. Awesome!
I look forward to when they get battery production up and the price comes down. Plus it's always good to wait a few years on a new model so they can work out any bugs.

16. I keep asking myself
If this technology becomes hugely successful, how could our power grid support millions of these things plugged in every night for 8hrs. Most power is generated from coal. Seems unsustainable to me.
