Dodd casts doubt on Warren's confirmability
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/109539-dodd-doubts-warrens-confirmability-for-new-consumer-protection-post

(...)

"I think Elizabeth would be a terrific nominee," Dodd told NPR's Diane Rehm on Monday. "The question is, 'Is she confirmable?' And there's a serious question about it."

(...)

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has circulated a letter that backs Warren as head of the consumer agency.

Dodd said it was conceivable Warren could win the 60 votes necessary — meaning one Republican would have to cross the aisle if all 59 Democrats voted together — but cautioned she wasn't the only qualified candidate for the position.

"The question is, can we get someone who is confirmable? She may be, but that's not the only potential nominee — there are many fine nominees," he said.

Dodd explained he wasn't aware of the source of the rumors about confirmability, though.

"I don't know, I'm just telling you what I'm picking up," he said.

1. Here we go again. Senate Dems prematurely folding, rather than fight for the best nominee.
We are watching, Dems.

23. Is that a prediction about President Obama?
Is it based on past performance?

24. Hardly..not one I believe.
But this is one I've seen on DU due to the fact certain people were not confirmed while some people were not confirmed but Obama signed them into the job through an executive order. People on DU have said that he doesn't "fight" for his candidates or he gave into Repubs.

7. I'm so glad we are getting rid of Dodd here in CT. Dick Blumenthal would come out
swinging against any republican that would seek to derail Warren. He's a true liberal.

22. It IS time that we had two new Senators in Connecticut. Now it is on to Lieberman in 2012.
I hope his poll #'s in 2012 are still as poor as they are now.

3. Fuck you Dodd
You're the one who turned the opportunity for REAL reform into a pathetic "Federal" Reserve sellout. Thanks to you, the damage is done, and I'm sure your next job, working for some part of this criminal fucking industry is already well secure. Go fuck yourself, Chris. God knows you have fucked this country enough.

8. hard to get that 51 vot majority when you only have 59 votes.
I predict that 51 will become the new majority when the republicans have 51 vote.

26. The democrats weren't able to filibuster everything as a matter of course
for whatever reason, whereas Rs all fall in line.

One argument I'm going to use this fall and we should all use is "a vote for a Republican is a vote for a filibuster."

18. yes, but until Dems were in power there was very little that was filibustered
Now saying good morning is subject to filibuster.
The Constitution says nothing about a supermajority. Senate have that and until now it was only used for very special reasons.Time for it to go the way of the bow and arrow.

12. Who IS confirmable????
The Republicans don't want a Consumer Protection Agency period and will filibuster ANYBODY no matter what. Warren seems to be the best qualified and most appropriate candidate for the job. Obama should go for it. Recess appointment, anybody???

27. Per Hartmann yesterday, banksters still have billions in toxic assets
Dodd & Geitner want a nominee who won't look into that - will let them carry those duds and not tell anyone. Warren will actually protect the consumers, so she is probably not going to get confirmed

28. Dodd is trying to torpedo her
Americans for Financial Reform, an alliance of more than 250 organizations that has spent the past year advocating for financial reform legislation, said that Warren is the "most experienced, effective and independent person" to serve as the critical first chief of the new agency...

Progressive Change Campaign Committee, announced their support for Warren on Friday. The PCCC even launched an online petition urging President Barack Obama to pick Warren as the chief of the new agency designed to protect consumers from predatory lenders. More than 100,000 people have signed it so far.
(Sign petition here: http://act.boldprogressives.org/cms/sign/petition_warren/}

It's up to 148,964 now. Their goal is 150,000
