2. There's nothing wrong with what he said.
There is a political motive to his statement, obviously. He distinguishes the organization from some of its members, who, he says, have made racist statements. It would not be sensible, politically, for him to call the organization racist, but would have added more fuel to the fire lit by idiots like Palin. I don't think you understand what he was trying to do, which is what any politician would have done under the circumstances. Note also that Obama has expressed the same opinion. Don't fly off the handle. Biden is a smart guy. You are buying into the silly notion that he always puts his foot in his mouth. He doesn't.

5. They didn't just make racist statements, though. Their behavior has been racist
Not just with the horrible, offensive signs at the rallies, but the refusal to acknowledge or admit that members of Congress were spat upon and yelled at. To this very day, BOTH the tea baggers and the Republican party refused to denounce the racism within the ranks. Not just the rhetoric but the behavior as well.

Jimmy Carter was right. And so is Biden, but he didn't--and could not--go far enough.

4. I'm black and I don't think the modus operandi of the tea party is racism.
My problem with the so-called "movement," which comprises a very small sliver of people in the first place, is that there IS racism in the ranks. And the fact that the leaders won't stand up and condemn the racism--blatant and subtle--is what bothers me.

The fact that there was racism at Palin and McCain rallies is what angers me. And racism that the Republican Party itself refused to denounced. They all claimed that there was no one at Palin rallies shouting "kill him." They claimed that there is no evidence that would prove that black congressmen were shouted down with the "N" word or spat upon.

It is the fact that the Republicans AND the Tea Party refuses to see the racism there is what angers me, not just as a black person; it should anger EVERYONE regardless of race or gender.

Biden said the exact right thing: the organization itself isn't racist; the people in it ARE practicing racism.

6. Exactly. The "movement" itself got started
to promote anti-big-government, anti-tax ideas, which are standard notions among right-wingers. However, because the teabaggers are right-wingers, we can expect that their ranks include some significant number of people who also express racist views. Obviously, the "movement" is overwhelmingly white and Republican. You are absolutely corect in stating that the most disgusting thing is the Republicans' refusal to repudiate the obvious racism expressed by some people in the organization.

15. However, I am more disturbed by the fact that the Anti-Defamation League
is nowhere to be found. I want to know why?

These teabaggers continue to sensationalize the Holocaust for their own political ends. It's disgusting and hateful, and yet, there are no Jewish groups to be found.

10. That doesn't even come close to qualifying as "putting his foot in his mouth".
And actually, it was the most appropriate thing for Biden or anyone else at that level of government to say.

11. You can't necessarily say the whole organization is racist
It's clear that most of them are the types that gave Clinton a bad time, they just don't like Democrats and don't take losing well. There are plenty of racists in the mix though.

13. You would prefer the headline to read, "Biden:Tea Party a racist organization"?
We'd have to hear about that all goddamn month. "Hey, Biden called you guys a bunch of racists! You gonna take that?!?" etc.

If you don't scratch a mosquito bite, it stops itching on its own and you don't screw up your skin. ;)

18. "Biden: Tea Party unedecuated, racist, greedy white people who never learned how to share."
I wouldn't mind hearing about the fallout of that.

Biden's move means fewer headlines.

16. I Am So Tired...

of people saying that Biden is a gaff machine or that he puts his foot in his mouth. Yes, there have been times when it would have served him better not to say something. The truth of the matter is that Biden says what's on his mind. In most cases that is an indication of someone who is NOT AFRAID of his convictions. In addition, it is also an indication of "honesty." I would rather have someone who speaks his mind honestly than someone who parses words and tries to play all sides. (Even if it gets him in trouble).

On Edit: Let me add that Mr. Biden has a history of not letting the Regugs get away with anything that doesn't serve the best interests of the American people.

17. Not everyone in the Tea Party is racist but there are racist elements within the tea party.
How is that different from what many Dems have already said? That is the problem...the heads of the movement have tolerated the racists within their little nutso party.
As for Biden's "gaffes" at least he one of the few genuine politicians out there.
