Teaparty WWII vet writes letter to President Obama.
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 01:18 AM by white_wolf
I saw this posted on another site and while I highly doubt anyone here would agree with what this man says I thought some people here might find it interesting. Before I post the link though let me say I do not at all agree with what this man says and I think he is wrong on all accounts. I also find him to be totally condescending and very rude even to me let alone to the man who is the POTUS and should remember the respect for the office which I am sure he was taught in WWII. I do have to say I find it sad that the tea party and its ilk have even effected the "Greatest Generation." Anyway here is the link if anyone is interested in reading it. Opps forget the link http://clarionadvisory.com/?p=4235

3. My thoughts excatly.
I normally have a great amount of respect for those who serve our country, but this guy just lost all of mine no matter what war he fought in. To be honest it makes me wonder about the whole "Greatest Generation" phrase. To be totally honest I feel that any generation would have done the same and I do not view them as any greater then those who fought in the Revolution or those who are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan now.

4. I've always felt the same way. Given similar circumstances I think
my generation would have responded as well. I graduated in '79.
I saw some stats from Viet Nam that told a different story than what you might think. The recruitors did real well early on. plenty of young men willing to join up to fight communism. Later on, when public opinion changed that wasn't the case, but for a good reason.
The ratio of enlistees to draftees in combat units was about the same as in WWII.
The way you see it portrayed, every kid rushed to join up right out of high school in WWII, while most Viet Nam era kids were draft dodgers.

5. Just read it
Some of it I agree with and some I don't. He doesn't seem that hateful to me. Just old with the conservatism of old age and I don't mind that in a geezer, I hate it in anyone under about 75 though.

6. I can see how somebody younger
can spit upon the sacrifices of those who fought in WWII. After all, their history lessons come from Fox news.

7. ugh - now that I've read it, the guy is a certified repuke tool
I love how he takes so-called "quotes" by Obama and Michelle COMPLETELY out of context - nice propaganda there

Oh, and "But if you’re not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you’re thinking of." - do you think for one minute this old fuck questioned the motives of GWB, the fucktard that got us into that mess???

FAIL

8. Is it weird if I find this letter a hoax?
I always figured that most military guys, especially those in older age would normally tell what squadron and war they fought in. This oldie doesn't mention anything like that----that struck me as weird. Secondly, most of the dialogue was weird, the quotes tossed in and those used like the "police" one. It's a bit odd. Most people thought the cop one in context was not out of line for Obama---and as a man of 95 years of age could relate to someone else disrespecting them if they forgot their key.

The final thing that bugged me is this: "I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you’re the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job."

I would figure most people would respect the role Obama or any citizen of the US would feel about being a Pres who is not a vet---more than 90% of the time has been seen as in a way similar to church.

9. To be fair I feel that if his information wasn't from a distorted source he'd probably like ....

the President because there is an underlying message says that he wants to like him, but how he's portrayed by faux he can't do that. They never showed the bad points of Bush and they misrepresent everything that is good about Pres. Obama. Well that's my eternal optimistic view on it.

10. "You’re not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy."
I wonder if bothered to write Dumbya while he was bloating up the economy?

13. Pure Shit. What was your goal here?
I know you said you thought some might find in interesting, but why?

Informed dissent is one thing, foolish "refudiation" is quite another.

14. BTW Mr. 95 year old vet, you are NOT wrinkle free.
And it's obvious that "pretty much mentally alert" is a relative comment.

15. I had a confrontation with a WWII Vet
at our dog park. It was last summer, but this diary reminded me of the incident.

He looks to be in his 80's of course, uses a rolling walker, and his mid-sized collie is a good dog. As a dog lover, I notice these things in other dog owners. He does love his dog and takes him to the park often. That shows some compassion and heart, imo.

He wears his Navy cap all the time without fail (to the park), evidently proud of his service. The short version is we talked several times over the course of the summer, and then he started in about Rush Limbaugh being great, and the Liberals ruining this country.

Sorry Charlie, but I don't care what you have done in the past, if you fight for the right of health insurance companies to take more and more of our incomes AND try to not deliver what we paid for, you are not my friend and I don't respect you.

I stood my ground and told him Rush is a liar, that corporations will not do what is best for the middle class, and that he needs to stop listening to Fox noise.

He then claimed I was a know it all, and that because I did not serve in the military I was a coward.

I told him he knew nothing about me, that he could not talk to me that way and then asked him what he fought for, corporations stealing our resources and moving to China?

He quickly turned and walked away slowly but it was fast for him.

We now avoid each other.

What do you do?

All I know to do is to be as "passionate" as the person on the other side. Take it to their level whatever their level may be, because people understand their own way of communication.

It all boils down to the right wing noise machine, and the damage they are doing. It is also frightening that SO MANY people can be influenced so easily and effectively.
