This has been a huge day for the President and for Democrats.. mark this day on your calendar..
this could be the turning point. Passing FinReg and potentially capping the oil gusher are huge positive developments. I suspect the President's and many Democrat's poll numbers will begin to climb and remain there hopefully through the November elections.

not sure about a jobs package.

16. 11,000 road projects only created 17,000 jobs? Something is wrong with that, not even 2 jobs per
project?!? Sorry, not going to cut it with the millions of us out of jobs.

23. Well there's the problem right there...
We need to hire more than 1.6 people to complete a road project!

47. That is one reason a WPA today would have to be so different - we build
things differently today, the equipment reduces then number of people who are involved with the hands on work. Components for things are shipped in ready to assemble instead of being made on site. Some of those beautiful old stone buildings and bridges that were built back then hired as many guys to assemble scaffolding as it did stonemasons - now there are lifts and buckets that would do that.

I live along the Blue Ridge Parkway - and one of the most awesome things I've learned about it is that it was built in 7 different sections - not in order or a straight line - they jumped around and did different sections depending on where they had the most people starving and needing work. Now that's a government program worth having!

20. road projects?
I think they employ municipal and state workers. How about some new jobs? Jobs that can be done year round.

35. some municipal and state jobs are helped by the grant money
but usually the large projects are bid out and in Ohio it has to be prevailing wage jobs. It does mean that private companies like local Kokosing call more people back from layoff. I think it is hard to put a jobs created number on road projects like that... if the crews have work, they get called back or don't get laid off... but I don't think it is really creating a lot of "new" jobs. Locally, it helps for sure... and it certainly helps those workers and their families that are working rather than being on lay off, but I just don't think it is big enough to make employers hire many new people.

41. 17,000 jobs in the first quarter, I think you mean.
Last July, we were excited about having 1,750 road projects under construction. This July, we're talking about nearly 11,000 projects working to improve nearly 30,000 miles of roadway.

So, just as it was designed to do, the Recovery Act continues to pay dividends for American infrastructure and American workers.

And it will continue to do so, with the total number of stimulus-funded jobs expected to rise from 2.5 million as of May to 3.5 million by the end of this year.

21. Passing FigLeaf won't prevent the next, inevitable Wall St-made financial crisis
and the inevitable followup: the trillion-dollar bailout.

I don't see how anyone in office can take credit for BP possibly putting a stop to their own gusher.

29. I could have sworn you posted articles that bashed Obama for not stopping the oil
or causing it. But when BP stops it, it's BP who did it and Obama had nothing to do with it. If anyone listened to the Coast Guard, you'd be aware that almost all the moves of BP were pushed along by Obama working closely with the Coast Guard. I watched 80% of the Coast Guard sessions on CSpan. AS far as financial reform it's not perfect but does a lot of brilliant things. But he didn't write this bill either---so don't give him credit--but you'd blame him for it.

Since none of those things happened, I'm not sure how you are tallying this as a point in the Administration's column. That was my original question. But really, I'm just so happy that the sucker is actually capped, I'm not really spoiling for a fight over it, it was more of a nitpick. Sorry to annoy! :hi:
