Republican senator says he backs birther lawsuits

WASHINGTON – Republican Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana says he supports conservative organizations challenging President Barack Obama's citizenship in court.

Vitter, who is running for re-election, made the comments at a town hall-style event in Metairie, La., on Sunday when a constituent asked what he would do about what the questioner said was Obama's "refusal to produce a valid birth certificate."

Such claims about Obama's birth certificate have been discredited. But with the crowd applauding the question, Vitter responded that although he doesn't personally have legal standing to bring litigation, he supports "conservative legal organizations and others who would bring that to court," according to a video of the event.

3. David Vitter's primary: Another nuisance for the incumbent, a boon for Democrats
By Aaron Blake

If Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.) can somehow pull an upset of Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) this November, he may well look back on Friday as the turning point.

Vitter learned just before the weekend began that he will face a primary this year, with the 11th hour entry of former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Chet Traylor into the race.

Vitter's prostitution scandal aside, there's little reason to believe he is in a heap of trouble in either the general election or the primary this year. In the three years since the scandal broke, he has set himself up as a vocal critic of the Obama Administration and continues to have reasonably strong numbers among GOP voters (71 percent approval in one poll, 62 percent in another) and in the general election, where he leads Melancon by double digits in most polls.

But that's not always the whole picture. When a politician has serious vulnerabilities -- as Vitter definitely could -- a strong challenger is often needed to bring those to light. Melancon has been trying for months to chip away, and those efforts have only begun to pay dividends recently. Now, enter Traylor.

Vitter's New GOP Challenger Says ABC News Report On Violent Aide Helped Spur Primary Bid
Chet Traylor Says Women 'Concerned' About Senator's Record and Ex-Aide Brent Furer

The last-minute primary challenger to Louisiana Sen. David Vitter told ABC News he entered the race because of what he describes as a groundswell of concern among Republicans that Vitter may be too damaged by scandal to survive the general election.

Why did Sen. Vitter keep Brent Furer on payroll after domestic abuse charges?

"I got so many phone calls in the last week or two, they wanted another option," said Chet Traylor, a retired state supreme court justice who has just launched his first statewide campaign. "They want, and I want Louisiana to have, a Republican senator."

10. Vitter
chose his words carefully. He'll be able to back pedal on a moments notice.

In his statement, he clearly NEVER states that he thinks Obama was born anywhere outside of the USA. His statement merely refers the the rights of people to litigate...that's it end of story. He supports the right to litigate. He even admits that he doesn't have the evidence to push any personal litigation.

The guy is a slime bucket. Playing with words and hiding behind fuzzy meanings.

9. We have a clear choice
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 03:59 PM by BlueIdaho
We can work with Democrats, pushing for a more liberal agenda for this country or we can sit in the corner and sulk while republicans persue an agenda aimed at consolidating wealth and power in the hands of their chosen few.

If anyone thinks the poor, the sick, the descriminated and the disenfranchised will be better off under Republican rule, they need to recalibrate their reality.

11. No, the nightmare will never end.
The right is fed and nurtured by hate, misinformation and fear - with FOX news, they have access to feed 24/7.

and fair-minded than ever before.
