David Brooks: Palin is a joke
Said this on the Stephanopoulos show on ABC this morning. And George Will was predicting how she will sink once the Iowa Caucuses come around.

No one there was giving her any credibility or any chances of getting the nomination. Someone - don't remember who - said that if the Pugs want a populist, they have Huckabee.

Only Gwen Ifil was saying that for many women she resonates. That Palin at some point even used the term "glass ceiling."

It could be that some women may empathize with the way she was treated by the McCain campaign, but I think that these days, if any woman has to wonder about descending to the door mat status, the Stupak-Pitts Amendment is the reason, not Palin.

And... on the local paper, the political cartoon shows Pawlenty with a bracelet WWSS - What Would Sarah Say...

She would win down here in the South....
lets not kid ourselves. But she definitely would not win the Presidency.

13. When she is better known she will lose tremendous support with
everyone who does not seem to share her religious views.

National Security Republicans would not support her, and many people in the military who almost never vote Democrat would not vote for her because they do not want to disrespect the military by having a complete idiot as commander in chief and deciding issues of war and peace.

I highly doubt that she would take Florida, North Carolina or even Georgia.

Ironically even some of the fundamental ideologues who share her far right political and religious views are not inclined to support a woman for high office.

She wouldn't take any state in the far West except Idaho and Utah and those might be doubtful based on her inability to even tell the truth in small matters.

36. I agree that she'd poll well in the south which just baffles me?
How do Southerners connect to a nasally, Yankee, hockey mom, moose hunter?

As a lifelong Southerner I just don't get it.

Ok, coming from the extreme radical religious right perspective, I get it.

they are moderate compared to Limpdick and Beck - are sounding the alarm.

She has banned the Republican Party from ever again shopping for her at David and his brother's place.

11. that would be cool
i think the repugs are due for a pretty major loss as of yet. Given the 84 and 72 elections that were pretty humiliating for the Dems, they're time's coming for something similar or worse. It'll be nice to see Palin do the deed.

17. Much of politics has become a side show

In the Republican Party she will become a major fund raiser.

BTW this is what Ronald Reagan did for 10 years before he was Governor - went to hundreds of small cities and raised huge amounts of money for local Republicans.

She will be able to go to lots of traditional Republican areas and at a time when they have no other stars, she will bring in thousands of people willing to pay a hundred dollars a seat to have their pictures taken with them.

This will give her a huge base.

I happen to think that she doesn't want to run for office, the one that should be really concerned is Rush Limbaugh. She knows that he has a much easier and more profitable job than actually running for office.

37. And the simple phrase, "President Ronald Reagan" was enough to get people laughing for years.

Then the voters in the United States proved to be more stupid than anyone thought possible.

I bet Palin will be president by 2021.

24. Agee. Palin would represent an electoral disaster not only for the
Republican bid to unseat President Obama but for Republicans up and down the ballot in all 50 states.

Palin could not even manage a softball interview with Couric but aspires to the presidency. It just doesn't look as if it's likely to happen.

If Iowa Republicans reject her in their caucus I more than half expect Palin to "go rogue" with a third party effort.

Her role in History may be to destroy the Republican Party one way or ther other.

4. "Populist"? In republicon speak that
means who can lie the best and still not be a dumb ass about it.

As for Gwen Ifill and her "for many women she resonates" comment.. I have to ask, "and, what kind of women are those, Gwen?"

The kind that don't know shit from shinola?

7. Lie down with dogs
Funny, the Republican establishment was perfectly happy with courting the vote of uneducated, uncultured, white, mainly rural, religious voters. Until such time, apparently, as they begin putting their own up as candidates.

Palin is she's far smarter and more articulate than the people to whom she appeals as a candidate: homelander America. If Palin is a joke, then the people who she represents must also be a joke, but the Republican establishment, in their faux populist mode, will never admit that.

39. Smart friends. One of the most depressing realizations I've had in the last few years is that there
is a huge group of American women who not just support but *adore* Sarah Palin. All of my friends, both male and female, are repulsed by every winky/bitchy/snarky/whiney/fundy/phony thing about her. But my sister-in-law thinks Sarah is wonderful. She says, to every bad thing I've pointed out about Palin, that "all politicians" do that." Yeah right.

14. If she's such a joke
how come I can't peruse DU without getting dozens of Palin posts polluting the articles list?

I've been staying off these threads in the hopes that she would just go away, but it seems like DUers are her press agents, giving her exposure at every opportunity.

I thought she was full of nonsense, but the reaction to her by others is telling me there may be more to it here. Why the obsession with a person who is essentially nothing more than just another GOP talking head?

15. That gang on This Week is pretty clueless.
I listen the the replay on radio (XM) and believe me they all sound like a bunch of dunces. I wonder what their track record is on other people they have pontificated about. It's probably no better than tossing a coin.

Brooks never knows what the score is. George Will, rarely. Snuffy has nothing to add, Cokie is a joke. I no longer waste time actually watching the show, but if I'm in the kitchen I'll listen to whatever replay is on POTUS.

These guys, these Washington insiders, simply don't know anything relevant to the real world.

Their opinion of Palin is about as valid as mine, or yours is. Not worth worrying about.

Brooks' turning on her signals his willingness to admit that she's a zero.

We should hope that the GOP takes no notice of him, and tries to run her.

22. Her GOP rivals likely feel she can be defeated in Iowa and New Hampshire,
Edited on Mon Nov-16-09 04:23 AM by saltpoint
but many of them will not publicly use Brooks' description despite agreeing with him in private because if Palin draws the nutbags to the party she can also leave town with them were she to "go rogue" in a third party effort.

That would destroy Huckabee or Romney or any other Republican ticket and ensure Obama's re-election.

I agree with Hekate upthread: Sarah Palin is another monster the Republican Party has created in its own labs, one with the potential to turn against them.

Remember when Rich Lowry alluded to masturbating to Sarah Palin at the Presidential Debates? (Well, he probably waited until he was in the prvacy of his own home, but still.) Rich Lowry deservedly lost a lot of credibility over that editorial.
