17. The right wing media told everybody who would listen that 'Bush won in Iraq"
The story didn't work; McCain lost badly. We still have a standing army of 90,000 troops in Iraq, who are still fighting.

In Vietnam we were using F-4s against peasants in black pajamas. Today we are using JDAMs against suicide car bombers.

If there is any 'winner' in Iraq, it will be Raytheon and General Dynamics. The blood of our soldiers puts money in the pockets of defense contractors.

34. Sorry, I should have put a sarcasm thingy on my comment.
I cannot imagine how any of those people can even attempt a normal life. Poor things have been under such horror and mayhem for so long, we can't even begin to imagine.

I also can't imagine an end to it all.

Thanks for the explanation and reminder of the horrible things we are doing to the world.

22. What does that mean? We (by that I mean DU in general) HATED Betrayus before 11/4/2008
Hated him.

Fucking hated him.

Now we're supposed to "grow up" and like him, because he's a back row piece in President Obama's 16 dimensional chess game?

I didn't say you have to like him or anyone else, but you sound like a snotty second-grader . . . I hate you, General Butthead.

General "Betraeus" is appalling. Not a whole lot different than people who don't like Obama, calling him Hitler.

At least you identify youself with "these" people. Good to know.

Unless you can define "win in Afghanistan", which no one else at DU seems to be willing to take a stab at.

12. It doesn't matter who we put in charge, or how smart they are.
We could re-animate Sun Tzu himself, put him in charge, and if he's as brilliant as the legends say, his plan would be to withdraw and go home.

13. Just like Iraq. Actually it will be more
like our exit from Viet Nam. I think presidents just keep sending our men to die there so they won't have to be in office when the helicopters leave Khandahar with civilians clinging to the wheels.

This is merely adding a potted palm to the deck chair arrangement while the ship is sinking.

20. You know something? If calling it "winning" let's us withdraw forces
Then that's frickin' fine with me. Obviously there is no winning there, so if 'winning' gets us out - it's all good IMO.

Somehow, I think Petreus still believes in the W-word. ("Win" --- look it up in the 2008 Democratic Party Platform -- it's in there!)

24. Iraq involved the buying off of Sunnis. Who do we buy off here?
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 10:01 PM by Jennicut
Petraeus has about that option and nothing else left. How can COIN work in a country where there is Karzai for a leader? Afghanistan is not Iraq. We all know it, they all know it, and Petraeus has the job of extracting us out of this mess by sometime in 2011. Or keeping us there 100 years. Depends on who wins in the WH. Root against Hillary and Gates.

26. Well, Obama did promise to "win in Afghanistan" --- and guess what???
War's not yet over ----- wait for it! ---- it can go EITHER WAY!

I know, shocking, isn't it?

Just because America is (as you believe) hopelessly evil, doesn't mean we have to lose. No war is certain. So we could actually (not to blow your mind) -- WIN this one!
