Largest Teachers' Union In Connecticut Endorses Ned Lamont For Governor; More Than 40,000 In CEA
The state's largest teachers' union endorsed Greenwich cable TV entrepreneur Ned Lamont for governor on Tuesday, noting that his days as a volunteer teacher at a Bridgeport high school had brought him insight into the classroom.

The Hartford Courant's longtime education reporter, Grace Merritt, reports:

The board of directors for the Connecticut Education Association, which represents more than 40,000 teachers statewide, unanimously endorsed Lamont, a Greenwich businessman, over opponent Dannel Malloy, a former Stamford mayor.

"He believes teachers have a great deal of insight about education change," John Yrchik, executive director of the CEA said Tuesday. "Also, Ned Lamont's experiences working in an inner-city school in Bridgeport have given him insight into what it will take to close the achievement gap and turn around schools that are struggling."

3. Thanks, ccharles!
I didn't know he was running for governor. Interesting, his opponent got the party endorsement, but Ned is way ahead in the polls.

Those three reader comments are pretty nasty, though! What do people have against teachers?! sheesh

9. Malloy is okay but I will vote for Lamont. I really, really like his ideas best.

10. glad you are here, Jennicut. I am wrestling with my decision right now.
I can't find anything really wrong with Malloy but perhaps you have an insight that can help me.

What concerns me about Ned is not that he in any way holds wrong positions on any issue I care about. My difficulty is what he did during the time between winning the primary against Lieberman and the general election: he went on vacation to Maine. I just wonder if he can "take" the mental and physical pressure of being a governor. It's great that he isn't a party hack and that he has good ideas. I'm just wondering if Ned is "seasoned" enough for the thankless job of governor. It's not enough for him to be a "great guy."

This makes me sad, of course, because I was one of his volunteers back in 06. But these are nagging worries...
