Think about it. If Obama fires him, he escapes any culpability for the inevitable failure of the surge in Afghanistan, and he can rack up huge appearance fees and media appearances as a private citizen whereby he can blame Obama for the "failure" in Afghanistan.

It would explain a lot.

on the subject. It would sort of squelch McChrystal's opportunities for bailing out and doing the talk show circuit.

At first I was emphatic that Obama fire the weasel but there may be some truth to keeping your friends close and your enemies closer in a situation like this.

Does anyone knowif McChrystal can just up and quit if Obama doesn't accept his resignation? I guess if he quit it would just add one more quitter to the list of GOP hopefuls.

Mainly b/c I would feel partly responsible by hiring a known bushie in the first place, despite warnings from Tillman and Biden (who warned against this surge.) If he goes or stays, either way the blame for this war will fall on Obama. There are many ways this could be handled, mind you. It's difficult to see how this profoundly irresponsible behavior will work to his advantage.

He can distance himself from the failure of the Afghanistan surge. He can say that it would have work if Obama hadn't fired me.

It gives him an out.

In addition, he can cash in on huge speaking fees and a book deal as a civilian.
