"White House asks for possible McChrystal replacements"
White House asks for possible McChrystal replacements

Washington (CNN) -- The White House has asked the Pentagon to make a list of possible replacements for Gen. Stanley McChrystal because President Barack Obama wants to be ready if he decides to fire the top

U.S. commander in Afghanistan, a senior administration official told CNN Wednesday.

McChrystal is unlikely to survive the fallout from remarks he made about colleagues in a magazine profile to be published Friday, a Pentagon source who has ongoing contacts with the general told CNN earler.

He will likely resign Wednesday, the source said. McChrystal's fate is expected to hinge on a meeting scheduled Wednesday with President Barack Obama, who was "angry" after reading the general's remarks in Rolling Stone, according to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

He has arrived in Washington, and is due to meet Defense Secretary Robert Gates Wednesday morning before meeting Obama in the Oval Office, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

Then they will join a larger group of senior administration aides in a meeting about Afghanistan and Pakistan that is scheduled to begin at 11:35 a.m. ET.

While this could be a scare tactic, McChrystal doesn't strike me as someone who scares easily.

1. "All options are on the table," they said. So I don't think this is a scare tactic.

Obama is definitely doing his monk moves and meditating on the issue. I'm sure he didn't sleep last night and spent most of it taking in everything---probably reading through the RS article over and over again. Calling in his top guys to find out what's going on in the ground for an impromptu update on things and then went into seclusion to make a final decision on this. I think this was too be on the safe side and get the process ready while he works out the details. Logical and I sincerely doubt a scare tactic. Obama knows better that shit like this won't scare McChrystal----however a court martial might. <---That leads to dishonorable discharges.

2. Agreed. Obama is not a "game player" when it comes to national security
or war.

If reports are true that McCh did not offer his resignitation (TPM), that could be the nail in his coffin. I think it would be seen as extremely arrogant not at least offer your resignation after that kind of insubordination and his perverbial third strike. If he didn't, it says alot about him and none it is good.
