Breakfasting with a geotectonic researcher. Not good (BP well related)
Was talking to a group of long time friends at breakfast today. one is a geotectonic research scientist at UofMiami. We briefly discussed the BP well blowout.
The cracks are not a good sign. If the earth collapses into the reserve most likely a HUGE (many millions of cubic meters) methane/benzene/natural gas bubble would rise to the surface. Great danger of exploding if coming onto contact with any fire. Like a massive Fuel/Air bomb producing extreme shock waves

3. It's been stated quite a few times. No one knows how to plug it.
They are trying everything they're capable of without any luck so far. You do realize not only is BP "supposedly on this" but the Coast Guard has stated they're using International products and have called on people in the international community for this, they have contacted other oil companies for advice, and Obama has not only taken in the people from his DOI but also outside scientists well known in the field to help with this and is welcoming any other advice. I think it's unlikely we would find the panaceia now versus earlier on.

4. The nuke option is nuts.
That would cause a collapse.

2. This was mentioned on Rachel Maddow's show several weeks ago.
If some were paying attention or watching that show they'd be aware of this early on. This is what the President and everyone else is trying to avoid. In all of it, it's the worst case scenario.

5. If any part collapses the entire reserve could empty into the Gulf.
If that happens it will be the end of life in the Gulf, and it could be the end of the Atlantic.

Still doesn't make it less scary, though...

9. I know they are building relief wells, but if this is gushing from the seabed,
won't it be still leaking for who knows how long??

10. The high pressure gushing in the cracks could erode the earth.....
.... to the point of collapse of a large area into the reserve, opening it up.

Like a sinkhole a mile deep underwater.

11. Astonishing how little response you've gotten. I, for one, appreciate
you taking the time to recount your discussion. Such scary stuff, is everyone burned out or just avoiding any doomsday scenario? So this is how people act when the end may be near. Not how I would have expected. Even though I've read a lot on the subject and believe the situation is much more dire than we've been led to believe, I find myself just carrying on with life as if there's no catastrophe on the horizon. Kind of like living in an earthquake zone. You know you're probably fucked but it's home, family's near, etc.

12. "The cracks are not a good sign."
What cracks are you talking about? In the pipe, in the ocean floor?

Are they already present or are they just a possiblility at this time?

13. Both. Cracks in the pipe might prevent it from being sealed. Cracks in the ocean floor....
.... could cause a collapse into the reserve.

The BP Oil spill has the makings of a perfect storm because one can visibly see the cracks in the ocean floor when reviewing tapes of the live BP feeds. In the tape dated 6/13/2010 you can see oil spewing up from visible fissions.

The pressure at the base of the wellhead deep under the ocean floor is approx. 100,000 PSI. There is no known device to cap a well with such a high PSI pressure. To further complicate things geologists using a GPS and Depth finder system have discovered a large gas bubble 15-20 miles across and tens of feet high under the ocean floor.

A bubble of this magnitude if able to escape from under the ocean floor through a crack would cause a gas explosion that can only be described as Mt. St. Helen 's under water.

The explosion would take place 50 miles off the Louisiana Coast , instantly releasing a toxic cloud that the winds would carry to the shorelines. This explosion would also create what is called a Cavitations', sinking any ships, oil structures virtually anything floating atop the water instantly within at least a 10 mile radius, and thus could create a Tsunami which would travel towards the coast of Florida at a speed of 400-600 miles per hour. This has the potential of putting the state of Florida under water.

:(

I just picked a google link with some background on the cracks at random.

Bad pick.
