Crist vetoes Fla. abortion ultrasound measure - would have compelled women view image of ultasound
Crist vetoes Fla. abortion ultrasound measure
Proposal would have required women seeking abortions to view image

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed a Republican-backed bill that would have required women seeking a first-trimester abortion to pay for an ultrasound exam and, with few exceptions, view the image or have it described to them by their doctor.

Crist, a former Republican who is running for the U.S. Senate as an independent, said in his veto message that requirement would put an "inappropriate burden" on women seeking abortions and violate their privacy rights.

"Individuals hold strong personal views on the issue of life, as do I," Crist wrote. "However, personal views should not result in laws that unwisely expand the role of government and coerce people to obtain medical tests or procedures that are not medically necessary."

Crist's likely opponents in a three-way general election Nov. 2 have firmer stands on the incendiary issue. Republican Marco Rubio opposes abortion while Democratic U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek favors giving women a choice.

Crist, who has three sisters, has repeatedly called himself "pro-life" but often has said he prefers changing hearts to changing laws. He did so again in the veto message.

2. I believe I also heard that the woman would have had to pay $1500 for the ultrasound.
If the woman doesn't have health insurance how do they pay for it?

3. I heard that on MSNBC. I'm guessing you did, too.
They didn't explain how the woman is supposed to pay for it.

13. They don't care at all.
The only part they care about is making it hard to have a legal abortion, even in the case of rape or incest.

4. Crist is swinging to the left.
At least politically. He's smoozing with trial attorneys in Central Florida. Unfortunately, they're welcoming him with open arms, and that's not so bad, but they're also not opposed to accepting Crist's baggage friends.

It's a shame you can't take Crist and cut out his right-wing friends adrift. They don't deserve salvation. His loyalty to them may be what brings his political race to an end. Watch the Greer thing, because I suspect the Republicans are going to try to get Crist through him. Unfortunately for Crist, Greer isn't the only person he's appointed that has ethical problems.

My mother use to say, el que anda con la mierda un poco se le pega.

6. I can't believe
that we're actually seriously considering voting for Charlie, who has been a pretty good gov for us down here. The thing for me and the rest of my family is that Kendrick Meek is the weakest senate candidate I've seen since moving down here in the late 80's. He is getting ZERO coverage and if it comes down to Crist or keeping Marco Rubio out of the senate then we're voting for Crist.

7. One thing for sure.
If there are any skeletons in Crist's closet, we're going to find out.

8. I think there are-there have been rumours for a while now
I'll do whatever it takes to keep Rubio away from a Florida senate seat-even if that means voting for the independent. Crist has been pretty good lately and I believe he would probably caucus with the dems in Washington. The poll has it 37 Crist 33 Rubio and 17 Meek

the lives of citizens.

Not to mention, $1500???? For what? A ten minute non-invasive examination procedure?

Knowing how Florida legislators pander to lobbyists, I bet this bill was widely supported by the ultrasound manufacture and service industries.

What a crock! I really DETEST it when elected officials force their religious views up into all women's wombs.

14. Everyone say, "Welcome Charlie to the US Senate!"
.... I dont mean that this one decision will win it for him ... but it shows how things have changed since Anita Dunn et al have gone to work for him.

Ah well ... it's better than Macro I guess.

Too bad for Kendrick though.
