GALLUP: Republicans' rating down from March (36%) , Democrats' appears to have stabilized (43%)
Both Parties' Favorable Ratings Near Record Lows
Republicans' rating down from March, Democrats' appears to have stabilized
by Jeffrey M. Jones

PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans' favorable ratings of the Democratic and Republican parties are near record lows for each. The current 36% favorable score for the Republican Party is five percentage points above the low established in December 1998 as the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Clinton. The Democratic Party's 43% is two points higher than its record low measured in March.

Gallup has tracked favorable ratings of the major U.S. political parties since 1992. The latest updates are based on a May 24-25 USA Today/Gallup poll.

After showing improvement in recent months, Republican Party favorable ratings are down again. The current 36% rating represents a significant decline from the 42% measured in late March, and is nearly back to the 34% readings from late 2008 and early 2009.

Favorable ratings of the Democratic Party are down from last year, but after a sharp 10-point drop in late March to a record-low 41% -- perhaps in response to the passage of healthcare reform-- its rating appears to have stabilized now at a still low 43%.

who've offered at least an alternative to fossil fuels. Hopefully this is an incentive for all internationl nations to try and cut loose from oil. The time has finally come, that needs to be the topic all across the world. This is the time to push green energy talk as much as we can, while people are prepared to listen. Make them aware of Carter's solar economy and how things took a wrong turn with Reagan.

6. Not so fast
Gallup's generic polling shows the number of voters saying that they would vote for Republicans rising three points from last week, while the number saying they will vote for Democrats dropped four points. The 49%-43% lead for the Republicans is the largest that the pollster has ever recorded for the party. Moreover, Democratic enthusiasm for voting this fall fell a point, while enthusiasm among Republicans stayed about fifteen points higher. This indicates an even wider lead for Republicans once Gallup imposes a likely voter screen this fall.

What is really scary is the enthusiasm gap. We have got to get Dem voters more enthused or there might be trouble.

7. Jobs numbers are coming
and will just keep coming. Early estimates for May put it at 0.5 million. Unemployment will begin to fall more quickly than expected or advertised. This will be the story running into November. Republicans have nothing to do to improve their numbers which will only slide as more tea party fruitbats get on the ballot and occasionally speak in front of cameras. Economic growth and recovery have been undersold for a reason. We will do just fine and the party of Palin is in for a trip to the electoral woodshed. Count on it.

8. The GOP has a long, long list of truly pathetic candidates coming up for
the fall elections.

And no message to speak of.
