I suspect the real reason the right wing doesn't want to try the 911 terrorists
Edited on Sun Nov-15-09 11:54 AM by Kber
is that it may start to bring closure to a political cash cow.

911 was the political godsend that saved the Bush Presidency, gave resonance to the Republican message of security and, generally speaking, was the political gift that kept on giving.

On the other hand, if you are actually interested in justice, or if you lived through 911 up close and personal (as I did), beginning to bringing closure to this nightmare has a certain appeal.

In my house, (where my husband still suffers from mild PTSD and I still dread the Sept 11 anniversaries with clear, brilliant weather, preferring rain and gloom), 911 has acquired somewhat mythical status. The idea that the events of that day were caused by mortal men, men who can be brought to justice in the most prosaic kind of way, makes the day seem less overwhelming, less awe inspiring in its awfulness.

I think that by pointing out that 911 was an act of man, not a divine or natural disaster, it may allow us to move on, both as individuals and as a nation.

And I suspect that the Republicans aren't ready to let us heal.

1. I think you hit the nail on the head
9/11 is not about the loss of life or destruction on that day. It's about political advantage for the right.

2. You got it.
Sell the sizzle, keep the steak.

Besides, they probably did not want to hear in Court: "We could not have succeeded without the Bush administration!"

3. I disagree.
All sorts of inconvenient facts come out in trials. I don't believe they want that.

16. It is both and it is all
It un-bogies the big scary bogie man the RW has ridden AND some facts may come out... It also reduces the terrorists to petty criminals as opposed to an international movement the greatest nation on earth should give a shit about...

4. Good point.
Just like abortion and gay marriage. The primary value of these issues for them is to bring in more money and motivated volunteers.

6. For certain individuals, you may be exactly right.
But for the talking heads and loud mouths - I think they are looking at losing a revenue stream, pure and simple.

Or, maybe they just can't stand the idea that not everyone remains as terrified as they are?

12. The talking heads are protecting their collaboration with the bu$h regime
As we all recall, they were and still are pro bu$h.

8. I think there is more than just a grain of truth in your comments.
9/11 allowed an illegitimate presidential administration to seize national power. 9/11 allowed the neocons and their allies control of the Pentagon and the military machine.

9. And they retained power by portraying 911 like you would a tornado
Unpredictable and unstoppable (and therefore no one can be blamed for not stopping it).

10. Absolutely and at the same time take credit for their own apparatus not doing further harm.
Make no mistake, there were so many warnings about 9/11 from so many sources it's almost comedic.

11. BINGO!
"TERRA, TERRA, TERRA" has been the Neo-Con battle cry since that awful day, I'm sick of it.

18. After reading The Shock Doctrine, I have to agree with you
Bringing all the terrorists to justice and outing all the secrets may just be what we need to do at this point.

19. Not only that, but Obama's decision caught the GOP flatfooted and their response...
is discombobulated. This is because most of the American heartland actually wants these bastards tried.

20. It lays waste to PNAC, the big GOP Neocon Empire of the 21st Century
Edited on Mon Nov-16-09 08:31 AM by lunatica
They have to give up absolute power because they don't have that Arch Enemy to fight anymore.

But in time we'll be able to add this attempt at creating the American Empire into our history books to show how it hasn't worked for us either.

21. Yes, and it deprives them of their excuses for dismantling the bill of rights
It'll have to be the rule of law from now on, and that's going to interfere with their anti-Americanism.

22. The trial should open up doors to find out who was actually behind the 9/11 attacks
the trial of patsies should yield some info except they may keep their mouths shut - pity.
