New jobs report - suck it, GOP:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Three separate jobs reports released Wednesday signaled that the nation's employment picture may finally be brightening, and hinted that a government report due at week's end could show strong gains.

Private-sector employers added jobs in April for the third consecutive month, according to Automatic Data Processing (ADP).

Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas said planned job cuts in April dropped to the lowest level in nearly four years.

(snip)

The reports came ahead of the Labor Department's monthly jobs figures, scheduled for release Friday. The April data are expected to show a gain of 187,000 jobs, compared to an increase of 162,000 jobs in March, with the unemployment rate holding at 9.7%.

39. It's easy to predict what they'll say:
"This recovery would have happened anyway. It's the magic of the unfettered free market with its invisible hands and everything. If we would have been in charge things would have been much better by now. The Great Recession was Clinton's fault. I ran out of gas. I, I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts. IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD."

Besides, the jobs are in the construction industry where (add some lame high percentage here) of the workers are in unions, where (add some lame high percentage here) of people polled think that (add some lame high percentage here) of the workers aren't doing (add some lame high percentage here) of the work they should.

23. IIRC, the new claims were because people who had given up had started looking again.
They started filing for claims again. That may make this stat look bad when the situation really is improving.

Edited on Wed May-05-10 10:20 PM by AllentownJake
You can be a discouraged worker and still collecting unemployment. You know that right?

Do you even know what the BLS measurement is that will be coming out at the end of the month or how it is tabulated.

Give you a hint champ, it is a telephone survey, and the existing claims data or the new claims data are not part of the tabulation.

It is nothing more than a poll, and the way they get the U3 or U6 is more about classification than hard data.

New claims are people laid off collecting insurance.

The monthly data is 50,000 people who are called and the data extrapolated by their answers across the nation. The metrics that measure the answers is a moving thing and you find that out by reading.

Do us all a favor, educate yourself so you don't say silly things in the future.

41. Hard data is when people I know that are looking for work
find decent jobs. 9.7, 8.3, 11.1.

All just numbers when the rent is due and that tooth that is killing you will just have to wait so you can get your kid shoes without holes. All just numbers put together by people who have insurance and jobs - jobs making numbers that say everything is just fine. Ignore that pain. Things are just fine.

33. I want to add to the ignorance of what you just posted
You have to have a job and lose it, to file a claim, taking out the entire BLS weekly and monthly phone surveys. You should probably understand unemployment insurance before commenting on it and leaving little doubt on how little you know.

42. Not true at all. 9.7 is actually an awesome number and many wish it were alot higher
Think about it, with unemployment at 9.7%, the right wing radio show hosts, which are the though leaders of the party, can still be going on and on about how great it is that Obama has not brought unemployment down to that 8% that he claimed he would. "See, we made this huge mess and he didn't clean it up as fast as he said he would!!! He is a failure for not fixing our fuckups fast enough and we are Heros for making the mess in the first place. Woo Hoo!!!". I can just hear it now. Imagine if it was 12, 13 or even 25%? You would never see the leaders of the party so giddy! It would be like America losing the Olympics times 10. You guys can all wish for the country to fail so that some politicians in your party can get back into power.

So, ignore the fact that the number of jobs being created is increasing and try to keep holding on to any bad news that you can focus on and add conjure up a few more if it will make you feel better. Let me ask you, what will you do when unemployment starts to go down. Pretty horrible scenario for you, eh?

26. Better news, but...
yeah, I'm going to complain.

Until the people I care about who are out of work have permanent jobs, not just temporary, I'm going to complain.

Until my employer can afford to give us raises, or at least not cut our pay when budget time rolls around, I'm going to complain. Don't like it, too bad.

I want to believe that a jobs recovery is coming, but with my wife having spent so much time without a job, I'm not inclined to be optimistic.

I swear, the economic ignorance is priceless sometimes.

Here is the deal, the jobs will exist in a statistical adjustment, and that is about the only place they will exist.

New claims never fell below the 450,000 mark all month, which singles possible job creation.

This is smoke and mirrors, as are most BLS stats for many years. Every Administration wants to put the best spin on these figures. The last period of real employment gains was some 12 or 13 years ago. Since 01/20/09, its been nothing but damage control and bailouts. The fundamentals suck, but that's a long-term crisis.
