I will wait and see what is proposed tonight before making any judgment. Still, I expect to be disappointed. And I will say so if I am.

What I would like the President to say is that after eight years of bad decisions in the war on terror, we're just cutting our losses and getting out. I suppose the best thing I can expect is for him to state that the mission is to bring the heads of Osama and his lieutenants out on pikes, then declare victory and get out. I could support that a little longer. It shouldn't even take another 35K troops.

What I see is the US allied with a weak, unpopular and corrupt government fighting an ideological enemy, the Taliban. That's sounds a bit too much like Vietnam for my taste. Unfortunately, the comparison to Vietnam ends there. At least in Vietnam the enemy was Ho Chi Minh, a national hero who would have at least governed a unified Vietnam more competently than the sorry string the Ngo brothers, Nguyen Khan, Nguyen Cao Ky and Nguyen Van Thieu that the US supported. There is no Ho Chi Minh in Afghanistan. There is the Taliban, religious fanatics who have already governed Afghanistan and failed.

Still, the possible outcomes in Afghanistan are not worth the blood and treasure that it appears will be invested. Not to the US and not to Afghan people. Remember them? We'll be told we're fighting for their future. Whether the US gets its best possible outcome and Karzai and the drug lords continue to rule, such as they do, or whether the Taliban are victorious and start throwing young girls out of school and their mothers into burqas on the threat of public execution in the name of God, they will be the losers in this conflict.
