Bush's push to the moon was basically underfunded and then unfunded by the congress.. so now the President has to try and clean up that financial nightmare too.. keep NASA solvent and the United States as one of the top tiers in space exploration.

Does it ever end.. and when will we get a little help from the nay sayer peanut gallery.

"It all comes down to money. When NASA costed out the moon plan in 2005, the agency came up with a total price tag of $104 billion. The plan quickly spluttered when the budget increases promised by the White House didn't materialize. Now money is a big consideration in NASA's latest shift in focus."

1. Neil Armstrong should pony up the bucks if he wants to follow *'s plan.
I have no doubt Obama will get this sorted out. His record is close to 100% on these types of issues.

5. It wasn't "Bush's plan." As we all know, he wasn't a rocket scientst. :)

It was NASA's plan to do something great on a shoelace after being given an unfunded mandate. One of the clever things about Constellation was that it was designed to survive anything but a total cancellation. Since it used mostly off the shelf parts, R&D was a considerably smaller fraction of development costs, which are of course the most unpredictable parts of the budget and also those parts which tend to increase out of control. If you halved Contellation's budget, it'd just take twice as long to get finished.

That's one of the reasons I get so infuriated with the "late, overbudget, uncreative" meme. It's like strangling a man to death and then criticizing him for both needing too much air and not being very good at breathing.

3. Thank you and people are giving him crap about it. It was another unfunded
Money pit left over from the previous administration and I have no problems with the new plans being outlined by President Obama.

4. Well, all I know is, Obama is FINALLY LBJ...
.... remember that scene in the Right Stuff when the astronauts got mad because LBJ didn't want to give them a window in their orbiters and wouldn't call them "pilots" etc. That's what all of this reminds me of.

Ah well ... the President is enjoying one of the perks of being the President right now. He's sitting in the fanciest plane on earth being regaled in the tales of yore by this dude...
