"Florida Democrat wins first US House election since health care bill passed"
Edited on Tue Apr-13-10 08:55 PM by Clio the Leo
We need to figure out a way to make ALL of the November elections "special" elections. lol ..... we OWN them! "Well, it might rain that day, let's have a SPECIAL election next Friday!"

Deutch Wins Florida Special Election

Ted Deutch (D) easily won tonight's House special election in Florida's 19th congressional district against Ed Lynch (R).

The AP called the race with Deutch leading, 62 to 36%.

The Hotline: "The race was never expected to be close, but some were watching to see if the health care debate would have an impact in this heavily-Dem CD. If appeared to have a negligible effect, as Deutch won with margins just slightly under the norm for Dems in the CD."

1. Um...
Lynch had hoped public disdain for the health care bill and low congressional approval ratings would help him upset Deutch, widely seen as the front-runner. He sought to do what Republican Scott Brown did in Massachusetts when he won the Senate seat held for nearly a half-century by Democrat Edward M. Kennedy.

Lynch lambasted the health care overhaul as a government takeover and the gutting of Medicare, the government-run program providing health coverage to seniors, while Deutch told voters the reform would provide immediate relief.

Lynch had also slammed Obama's stimulus bill as doing little to help the economy and called the president's timetable to withdraw troops from Iraq "moronic."

Deutch said he would have voted for the health care overhaul and the stimulus bill and supports Obama's Iraq strategy.

Could that be because this was a special election? :shrug:

13. His opponent spent a LOT of money here
When Wexler held the seat I do not recall the Repubs putting much effort in here, they seemed to believe (rightfully) that they could not beat him. This race was different however, VERY different. They tried very hard to beat Deutch, and that may explain why they were able to make it just a little closer than prior races.

Of course if the Republican would have won, they'd be talking about that
all the way until November. The media that is. I'm just glad that they have
to shut their piehole and keep on boosting the Teaparty people and that
Palin chick instead.

4. So does this mean that the people have spoken yadda yadda yadda and that
the country doesn't want to elect pukes? I know no one ever accused these jerkoffs in the press and the right of being consistent.

I think every Democrat should get on TV and parrot this victory over and over.

6. Wonder how this will be spun?
Doesn't look like health care reform has given the GOP the boost it needed.

But we have to mobilize Dems..overall Dems and INdies who lean Dem are lazy if it's not the general election time.

12. I don't see on Detuch's campaign site where he supports single-payer or a public option
This is a big thing for me. The "reform" bill that Obama signed last month doesn't go far enough, and we need Democrats on the Hill who aren't satisfied with healthcare as it stands now.

Of course, if Deutch has expressed support for real reform elsewhere, please share it here.

21. A little research was all that was needed.
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/opinion/ted-deutch-on-the-issues-509974.html?showComments=true

<snip>
Do you favor or oppose the health care bill? Explain.

While certain reforms I would have liked to see in the health care bill were left out, overall this new law improves America’s health care system. The 16,000 residents with preexisting conditions living in Florida’s 19th district who lack insurance will now get coverage. The 19th district is also home to 162,000 Medicare recipients who will finally see the donut hole closed, the elimination of co-pays for preventative care, and protection from rising premiums. After reform’s full enactment, small businesses and individuals can purchase affordable insurance from the exchange and they will get tax credits to pay for it.

<snip>

Those 'certain reforms ... left out' are a public option or single-payer, and capping premiums.

http://www.bgraberforcongress.com/ben_graber_in_the_news

<snip>
Price, Budd and Lynch staked out similar positions opposing tax increases, gun control and a government-run public option for health insurance. All three said tort reform should be part of any health care legislation.

Graber and Deutch said they support a public option and some form of gun control.

<snip>

Also, his stance on Social Security

<snip>
The Social Security trust fund is spending more than it’s taking in. What measures, if any, would you take to fix it?

....

Any challenges faced by Social Security can be fixed with relatively small adjustments. President Obama has admirably convened a deficit commission to examine entitlement reform and explore solutions like raising the cap on Social Security funding. In Congress, I will always fight any efforts to raise the retirement age or slash benefits.

23. Thanks - I'm not a fan of his gun-control proposals, but it's good to hear Deutch on HCR
I'm glad he's amenable to finishing the job instead of sitting on his hands like so many in Congress are wont to do now.

14. "Democratic Palm Beach County Commissioner Burt Aaronson said "
"Deutch's victory "show(s) that people in Palm Beach County are not completely nuts....People in Palm Beach County still know a quality product when they see it."

<snip>

"Deutch, 44, an attorney and state Senator from Boca Raton, is expected to be sworn in as a member of Congress as soon as Thursday. His Florida Senate seat will be vacant during the final weeks of the legislative session, which is scheduled to end April 30.

Deutch will serve the last 8-1/2 months of Wexler's term and be up for reelection in November. Wexler stepped down in January to head a Middle East think tank."

<snip>

"Deutch campaigned as a supporter of President Obama and the new federal health-care law."

26. please see the reply to frenchie above
i communicated poorly so i am to blame for the misunderstanding

the line that you most likely find offensive is in reference to lynch the gop candidate and the amount of votes he pulled
i since learned limbaugh was pushing him on air on election day
which explains his large vote count in a county that goes dem traditionally

sorry about the misunderstanding
