Obama to attend Polish president's funeral
By Sam Youngman - 04/13/10 03:42 PM ET

President Barack Obama will travel to Poland on Saturday to attend the funeral of the late Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, Maria, who were killed in a plane crash last week.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs announced the trip Tuesday from the nuclear security summit, at which Obama had asked the more than 40 world leaders gathered to stand for a moment of silence earlier in the day.

Gibbs said Obama will travel to Krakow for the funeral "to express the depth of our condolences to an important and trusted ally, and our support for the Polish people, on behalf of the American people."

4. Wow. This is an important signal. It is a great honor for the Polish people.
And it shows Obama's humanity. It's a good thing, Barack...

5. What would anyone in their
right mind have to complain about this?

I've had it with all the whining about what this President does or does not do.

It's a good thing President Obama has his focus and vision and can concentrate on that instead of all the gibberish distraction coming from every which way.

6. I am sure someone somewhere will find something negative to say about it
But it will not change the fact that this is a good thing.

and you know for some on DU it's a 24/7 political battle. Don't be surprised if some try twisting this into complicit support for his views.

10. I know but a funeral is a funeral and people who
think outside their own little selfishbox know that one doesn't snub the funeral of a Country's leader who was killed in a tragic plane crash.

9. Something along the lines of, 'that Obama, jumping on a plane and
leaving the US again when this country is in such dire straits'. And gawd forbid if he brings any family members; then they'll call it spring break or a date night.

I'd be surprised if this was accepted by the rethugs without a gripe. It's what they do.

11. Anyone old enough to remember the world leaders marching in JFK"s funeral procession?
Edited on Tue Apr-13-10 08:05 PM by Clio the Leo
I'm not, but I've seen the footage and it's a very touching scene. Charles de Gaulle, Queen Elizabeth and others.

Surely someone in the President's position cant watch all of this play out and think, "there but for the grace of God go I...."
