I didn't qualify for the $400 tax reduction
And I didn't have more deductions like I had for many years that allowed me take itemized deductions. I was stuck with the standard deduction this year. BUT, I will be qualifying for the $500 above the standard deduction because of mortgage interest.

All the more reason now for me to pay off my mortgage sooner than later.

2. there is a financial benefit to doing that

We paid off our mortgage years ago. So, in one year, we claim property taxes twice (previous year's taxes can be paid before March, and current year before December. So two years are paid in the same year - and deductible in that year.). This exceeds the standard deduction. The other year, we take standard deduction.

This works if two years of property taxes exceeds the standard deduction. You can determine your own savings by calculating how much over the standard deductino 2 years of property taxes would be. Then determine taxes on that excess. We save about $1500 in these two years doing this.

3. I didn't get one, but I know what I would have done with it.
When Bush pushed through his first tax "relief," I endorsed my Treasury check "Pay to the order of Democratic National Committee" and sent a photocopy of it to the RNC before sending the check off
to the DNC.

The DNC did thank me, although the RNC, must have forgotten............
