Can somebody please explain to folks like me why the Republicans are so hysterical about the Secret
Service incident at the state dinner? It seems to me that there is already an investigation going on and it will result in tightening up the security. If anyone on the WH staff was involved with this publicity seeking couple then they'll get fired. This thing is a no brainer; it's gonna get fixed. I'm not glad it happened but it certainly was better that it was discovered because of a couple of professional fame-crazed idiots.

So what is the "issue" that Republicans are trying to promote here? Is it just one of national security? Because if it is, it's gonna look really lame after the stuff comes out about how the rules were relaxed for Bush bigwigs coming to the White House dinners (magnometers being turned off, for instance).

This strikes me as a "let's just pull something out of our rear ends."

1. It distracts from other substantive issues
where they clearly don't have a clue or know that reality is not in their favor.

It is a largely irrelevant distraction, and to those who do not want to present or confront facts and real issues, its therefore a useful ploy.

16. unfortunately all the media (liberal too) is talking about this. I don't get it either.
It is an internal issue. You can bet Obama and his staff will make sure it does not happen again. It is not "our job" to critique it. This is just mainstream press trying to make it look like Democrats don't know what they are doing.

Unfortunately, they don't need this kind of stuff to make it look like that. Democrats seem to be doing a fine job themselves with real substantive issues.

23. It's not that I am not concerned about Obama's safety, but
does a public discussion of just how security was breached enhance his safety?

I think not.

5. They're trying to portray the Obama administration as incompetent.
Because 1 pair of party crashers is so much more damning than the Bush administration's non-response to Katrina. (To name only one example)

17. Exactly right.
They have been pushing the "incompetent" meme as of late. That is why I'm seeing Tweety and other trying to peg this all on Desiree Rogers.

6. There is a longstanding RW myth that the Secret Service hates Democratic
presidents, and will not try to stop an assination attempt because they support the murderers over the liberal president. This has been around since Jimmy Carter to my knowledge, was very frequently talked about in the Clinton years, and came back strong with Obama's election. The RWers assume most people really "think" like they do, and hate Democrats enough to want us all dead.

The reports of the increased threats against Obama when he was first elected made them happy, but the fact that such threats have gone down-back to a normal level-tells them that the majority of even the crazies have accepted Obama as president to the extent that they are no longer threatening his life.
This makes the republicans sad.
They are trying to stir up more crazies to make more threats against the President to prove he is not successful.

7. Well, I am "old" too and I sure do agree with you. That's what we get with age I guess.
I wish I hadn't seen this before. Talk about sad. I'm a sad Democrat because I have seen so much. I don't want anything to happen to Obama.

Thanks for your enlightening response. I appreciate your post here and elsewhere!

8. The SS won't be assuming anything anymore..
<snip>

"Sources tell ABC News the leading theory in the ongoing Secret Service investigation is that officers at the initial White House checkpoint waived the couple in, assuming that their names would be checked against a guest list at the next one."

10. Just remember the GOP is the lowest of the low - there is absolutely
NOTHING that is to cheap for them.

(Palin comes to mind.)

Anything they think that will make Obama look less presidential they are tring to do - I would not be surprised if they were behind this whole thing.

12. They want to make it look like Obama's fault
That's pretty much the reason why.

I think it's a serious matter, and those at fault should face possible termination or suspension, but I don't think it's Obama's fault.

14. Maybe it's time for SS to be returned to the Treasury Dept instead of incompetent Homeland Security
... where Bush-Cheney-Rove put it.

It's the Secret Service's responsibility to do this particular job -- not the WH Social Office.

And who can ever fathom what the Publicans are up to until they've managed to fling enough poo around?

15. From an email with pictures to article.
“Party Crashers” had five-year relationship with Obama before state dinner

While the big gun media and American Secret Service are out there investigating “party crashers” Tareq and Michaele Salahi, no one’s telling the truth: Obama knew the Salahis when he was still an Illinois senator.

Polo Contacts Worldwide could make it easy for the investigating Secret Service by brown-enveloping them this picture:

http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/17310

I don't know the truth about any of it, but it sure sure looks odd. The whole damn thing is odd, and why is it taking over so much media attention I wonder. I read that Matt Lauer is interviewing the Salahi couple Tuesday morning. Gads, I cannot stand to watch the Today show, but I might just watch to see what they say.

The Salahis --- what a pair of attention whores.

And the media just plays into it and apparently some of us cannot help ourselves to stop knowing more about it.
