Overheard as a I walked into a donut shop this morning:
"He was waterboarded ONCE, not 49 times! Big deal! Why bring those terrorists to New York? They'll never be convicted in New York! And watch, if this guy gets the death penalty, you think Obama would sign the death warrant of a Muslim? Never! And you think you could serve on a jury? You won't want to because the terrorists will be after you. You'll be too scared they'll blow you up."
- anonymous white middle aged male talking to two older ladies sitting at another table

I was not eavesdropping. This is a small shop. This guy was practically screaming; you could not help but listen to him. He looked like he could be packing so I kept my mouth shut (except for a 'yeah' when he asked about the death warrant). I was with my kid, too, so I just got my son's donut and left.

I have seen insanity and it's in my neighborhood donut shop.

Edited on Sat Nov-14-09 09:24 PM by Mz Pip
You mean the same NYC that went through the horror of 9/11 up close and personal?

Get real. This is where the trial should be. Right where it happened.

I don't know what state you live in but NYC isn't about to let anyone walk if there is evidence that they were part of this.

17. That's where I am
but both my sons were in NYC on 9/11. No sympathy there for these guys. None.

One of my sons was watching some cable news show that had Liz Cheney yammering on about how Obama was soft on terrorism. Joan Walsh was supposed to be the opposing view. Joan made a point about Obama's stance on terror and the dimwit Cheney retorted something to the effect like, "Easy for you to say sitting in there MANHATTAN." Implying that her opinion was somehow "elitist". Joan had no comeback. My son did: "You mean the MANHATTAN where 3000 people died on 9/11?? Go back to Wyoming you fucking moron." He was so annoyed that the supposed counterpoint to Liz Cheney couldn't remember that.

NYC may have gone 85% for Kerry and probably more than that for Obama but they have to love or sympathy for anyone who may have plotted 9/11.

4. What is wrong with you?
You went into a doughnut shop and you only bought your son a doughnut? Have you ever had a doughnut? They are delicious! If you have a medical condition which prohibits doughnuts then I understand, otherwise I am a little disappointed in your decision to not purchase yourself a doughnut. I would suggest a punishment for you, but not having a doughnut is punishment enough.

a piece of pumpkin pie, a piece of chocolate cream pie, a hunk of bread pudding and a piece of apple pie (tho I didn't like that so didn't eat it). They were small pieces but still... I am a shamgless sugarholic. I know my donuts! I have plenty do-cred, honey. I had a donut just last week. I was just trying to eat a balanced diet for a minute to kinda......catapault the calories. So there!

14. Relatives in NYC tell us a lot of people are upset. This opens up old wounds.
What if these guys get off? Then what? People that approve of this action are talking about finally seeing justice; well justice could end up letting them off on a technicality, or they could do what jihadists did to a prison guard not that long ago; they poked his eye out with a sharpened piece of metal because he was befriending them and they used that to corner and attack him.

http://www.nsnetwork.org/node/1466

<snip>
Over the last eight years, our civilian courts have convicted and imprisoned nearly 200 terrorists, while Guantanamo has yielded only three successful prosecutions.
<snip>

Here is the important thing the more that certain stations and talking heads scream about being afraid to prosecute these criminals in New York, the more power they are giving to the criminals, The more citizens become afraid the terroist agenda has been achieved.

26. What utter bullshit
Take it from this New Yorker - all we're thinking is that it's about fucking time these people are going to have to face New Yorkers, be tried by New Yorkers and most likely be convicted by New Yorkers (NY federal prosecutors have a 95%+ conviction rate). Maybe moronic republican voters had their sense of justice satisfied watching bombs fall on Baghdad but New Yorkers are smarter than that = we want those who planned or took part in 9/11 to face justice right here where it happened.

The people that are whining about terrorists on our soil are nothing but a bunch of pansies who are scared of their own shadows. NY has already tried terrorists and they are in more danger of getting ripped to shreds by our citizens than they are of getting released or escaping.

28. Why are YOU rightwing dittohead reactionary Sarah Palin loving teabagging
Fox News watching chickens so SCARED of every damned thing? You fear everything and everybody who doesn't look, think, or worship exactly like you. Why? Come on. Grow a set! And your sorry excuse for a president, who was forced on this country for eight looooooong years is gonna look like an even sorrier excuse for a president when the criminals who attacked this country on 9/11 are tried and CONVICTED under the watch of President Barack Obama. So, stop the fear. Stop freaking out. Pull yourself together. Trust in this mighty nation you love so much and its legal system, its correctional system, and its Constitution. The bad guys, who have succeeded in terrorizing you, are at long last gonna stand at the bar of justice. So please, you and your "relatives in NYC," chill the eff out. We got this.

31. "9/11 Families Group Urges Congress to Shut Guantanamo Down"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6935999

snip//

As a member of an organization of those who lost loved ones in the events of September 11, I urge you to help restore our national sense of justice and fairness by supporting the closing of Guantánamo prison and assuring Constitutional trials for the detainees who remain there.

We urge the rehabilitation and release of those detainees cleared for release and not charged, and the legal trials of those charged either in established U.S. federal courts, in U.S. military courts, or in international courts of law. We reject the use of indefinite detention in any form.

Some people have irrational fears that bringing the detainees into the United States, and trying and incarcerating them here, is somehow an unprecedented and exceptional danger. This is a notion that must be put to rest. No one has ever escaped from a maximum security prison in our country. Many convicted terrorists are already in our prisons, successfully contained and kept from doing harm.

We applaud the attempt to completely overhaul the MCA of 2006, but we would prefer it to be revoked outright. We believe that existing courts and laws are capable of dealing with even “the worst of the worst.”

Further, we encourage you to work toward bringing an end to extraordinary rendition and black sites. We particularly urge the closing Bagram Prison, which has become a de facto Guantánamo in the eyes of the world. Terrorists are created by these injustices.

Each of us has experienced the trauma and grief of a sudden loss of a loved one. For this reason, we are committed to turning our grief into a force for peace and justice. We must stop the cycles of retribution and violence that plague our world.

Sincerely,
Peaceful Tomorrows

Also, can't our prisoners who are pedophiles, serial killers and other criminals, couldn't they do the same thing the so called jihadist did to a prison guard.

I guess they are the baddest people on earth. Oh,I forgot the republicons are, they can kick the whole worlds'ass. Haven't you been telling us this for years..

Wouldn't it open up old wounds if they had a military trial,I am sure the media will tell you all about it.

Any other great theories you have there, huntbir4? Other than the poking-the-guards-in-the-eye theory?

They could have let Ramzi Yousef off on a technicality too. But they didn't.

This is America. We put criminals on trial. it's our system of justice.

Let them yammer all they want.

Let all the facts come out. That's how we do it here. It isn't always pretty but it's a whole lot better than most places.

Then if they are convicted, they can get life in prison without possibility of parole. Sucks for them that they won't get to be martyrs. That's what I hope for anyway.
