Kucinich sends Origami cranes to Obama + A new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty

Kucinich Sends Message of Peace and Nuclear Disarmament to President Obama on Behalf of Japanese Students

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today sent 1000 paper cranes to President Obama, which he received from students visiting his office from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, to highlight the importance of nuclear disarmament. The students told the Congressman that they folded 23,000 cranes to represent the number of nuclear weapons estimated to exist in the world today.

“(The students’) visit was of particular significance as your Administration negotiates a new nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia. The successful ratification of such a treaty is vital in advancing support for a broader international nuclear nonproliferation initiative,” wrote Kucinich in a note to President Obama.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki are both cities where atomic weapons were detonated during World War II, resulting in massive civilian casualties and devastating health effects that persist to this day. The students, who visited Kucinich on March 24 in Washington, D.C, represent local peace groups in Japan who advocate for the eradication of nuclear weapons.

“Furthermore, their visit comes just before you plan to convene the World Nuclear Summit here in Washington, D.C., to discuss the advancement of a global nuclear disarmament track,” added Kucinich.

wonderful! hugs and kisses for the students

hope it made an impression on the Prez

2. I think Obama will miss the spirituality of the message
Obama has strong Christian fundamentalist tendencies, as seen by his giving millions of dollars to failed sexual abstinence programs and his continued support for the Hyde laws which target poor women.

3. President Obama's sister, Maya, is Buddhist
He will definitely NOT "miss the spirituality of the message"

I dare say he is more open to all viewpoints than those who criticize him.

9. He is as bombing happy as Nixon was
Haven't you been keeping up with the civilian casualties that our glorious arm chair Predator pilots are causing in Afghanistan and Pakistan?

14. Yeah Vietnam and Af/Pak are TOTALLY the same.
Carpet bombing is identical to single missile strikes, too.

15. Killing civilians is killing civilians. Genocide is genocide.
We have no business being the world's policeman.

16. Yeah, Obama should leave Al-Qaida alone. The U.S. had no business fighting in WWII, either.

17. Yes, Genocide. Af/Pak is the same as the Holocaust, the Trail of Tears, and Rwandan machete attacks
It is definitely equal to those things. No difference whatsoever.

6. You will known them by their deeds, not their words
This Administration has a strong social conservative bend, despite words to the contrary.

19. "This Administration has a strong social conservative bend"? Is that why the GOP love Obama so?
Edited on Sat Mar-27-10 06:40 PM by ClarkUSA
For example, strong social conservatives just LOVE this move by President Obama!

11. I bet taht Obama is much more versed in other religions having a Muslim step father
and living in Indonesia and in Hawaii.

Obama does not demonstrate fundamentalist tendencies and your reference makes it appear that you don't know what Christian fundamentalism is.

10. He will have to initiate cuts in our stockpile on his own authority
The broken-down Senate will never approve this treaty, but they can't stop Obama from reducing our stockpile of nukes, or for not deploying Star Wars. The Presidency has some advantages over the Congress when it comes to national security issues. The Constitution gives the President some leeway in how he runs the executive branch.
