So I was at the post office this evening...
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 10:12 PM by Divine Discontent

I was at the post office standing bored in a line of a whopping 20 people, and my friend called me to talk about the idiots ramming the car with the Obama sticker. I knew I was in the post office, and didn't raise my voice above a 2 (out of 10), which means a very gentle tone that is hard to hear more than 3 feet away. Well, in front of me standing slightly out of line was a very jovial older man, and about 3 feet directly in front of me was a Palinite. I didn't know she was one until I said, "we can't have those kids with pre-existing conditions getting coverage darnit, we're gonna ram your cars if we can tell your for the bill to prevent it."

She immediately started swinging her head violently left to right, and turned around and said, with eyes bulging, "that's just not true! they aren't going to get coverage! I just saw they're saying that isn't accurate."

I ignored her, realizing she was a nut, and said to my friend, "yeah, the GOP is gonna be hurting when those young adults who are at home helping a single mom survive, start getting health care and the votes keep coming in for Obama". Again, the lady turned around and said, "those things just aren't true, you couldn't even have read the bill, they kept everything secret until they shoved it through!".

I paused, and apologized to my friend then said, "I'm sorry ma'am, but I'm talking very low and I don't appreciate you interrupting me, it's no different if my friend was standing here right next to me talking about this as we wait in line, and you stop me to tell me what I'm saying is wrong". She said, "there's so much in that bill that you just don't know about, and you'll see how bad it is in time". I said, "I'm sure Palin has told you that it's a horrible bill, but she is just stirring the pot to make money off of people." She said, "she's a good woman, and her views make sense! It's a wasteful bill."

I retorted, still quietly and not overly emotional, with, "well, elections have consequences - your party lost horribly the last go round, and frankly, they created the mess we're in, so I'm glad we're getting some major changes to help get health care to tens of millions of people who suffer without it. Teabaggers complain about government waste - unless it's being spent on them - and that's the problem - they're selfish and that's why we see so many of them acting out violently". She then said, "Representative Cantor's office was shot at - Democrats do it too, just go look at the news, CNN is reporting it.". I told her, "That is a trumped up accusation by the GOP to distract from the repeated threats and attacks on Democrats the past few weeks, but, we needn't speak another word because your turn is up at the counter - good day!"

The funny thing is, the elderly gentleman between the two of us was holding his comments and gently swaying back and forth as the terse yet volume controlled argument finished, and as she picked up her packages off the lobby counter to go up to the clerk, he said in a thick striking Haitian accent, "the problem with those people is they don't like people different than themselves - they say they are Christian - I am certain with the actions they do, they are nothing of the sort and do not care for others. Why then would it be surprising to see them so violent over people getting medical care."

HA!
I smiled at the nice man (about 70 years old, very warn and tired, yet very warm eyes!) and said, "You are so right! Jesus said, they will be know by their fruit. And their fruit is poisoned."

I always laugh when others post their random right-winger stories, and my last one was the lady in the BMW SUV calling the cops on me for helping bandage the legs of the homeless lady back a couple years ago because it "only encourages them to stay here" (on the beach), so it was my turn for another encounter with one of 'em! I'm sure they'll be plenty more, I just hope no one is hurt by these whack jobs. And I will say, thank God that the nice man was there in line with me to say some words of wisdom as she picked up her packages to go to the front.

Just though I'd share my story.

8. The thing is, everyone could read these bills online, even the reconciliation bill.
I think some of these people WANT to stay ignorant. The big bad world frightens them too much. I know, I grew up in a conservative family and some my parents friends were very closed minded and bordered on being racist.

36. I had a similiar experiance at a conveniance store....

Loudmouth was going off on how "Pelosi says we should pass a bill without being able to read it"

I usually keep my mouth shut ... not this time. I told him he could easily read both the senate and house bills online ..all 2700 pages if he wanted. This was before it passed.

He was dumbfounded... but so was I ....Where do they get this crap from ..am radio?

Him and the clerk ..who I know ..just looked at me as if I was the crazy one.

sigh...

49. They do those bills in very large fonts. When they say 2000 it is really about 400-500
normal pages. I read through the parts of the Senate version of the bill I was interested in about 20 minutes. It isn't like it has been hidden until the last minute. The reconciliation bill isn't changing much, if it was it couldn't be a reconciliation bill. Senate version of the bill has been around for a long time for people to read.

10. I bet they heard the "They aren't getting coverage" story from CNN. They "teased" the story by
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 10:45 PM by jenmito
"asking" if children are covered right away for pre-existing conditions, and the conclusion was YES, that they WOULD be covered, but "some" were questioning the language in the law, and that when CNN contacted the WH, HHS, etc., they all said the language would leave no question that they are covered. So those who either didn't wait around to hear the whole story, or who didn't listen carefully, could've gotten the wrong idea. And that's how CNN wants it. :eyes:

21. The main thing to always point out is what did the GOP ever do to cut the cost of health care...
Edited on Sat Mar-27-10 06:45 AM by ProgressOnTheMove
When the answer is crickets. You say exactly, that's why the GOP oppose this achievement because they are ashamed of their own record. Most of them have been so focused on what the bill might do, they forget to see what Republican have never done in all their existence. There's no doubt that soma will oppose him no mater what, but when Grandmas still here and death panels never materialize the scam will be found out. This is what the Republican party now most fear

I admire your restraint and patience.

The "couldn't have even read the bill" comment would have been a break point for me I think. It would have ended with a snarled "and you have?" followed by a STFU.

39. Utterly divine, Divine!
I hope I can be as calm and articulate as you were if and when I get the chance.
The consensus here that some people really don't want hear real information is terribly true, I'm afraid.
And the Eric Cantor bullet tale is a prime example of how to feed the frenzy of stupid and plant lies that are virtually permanent.
He got out in front with a bullshit story about being shot at. The woman you spoke to heard that story and clings to it because it matches all her preconceptions.
Even if she heard corrections later, she'd block them from her consciousness.
Getting the lie out there first is very effective. It's like the old complaint about newpapers....They print the error in big type on the front page, and run the corrections in a teeny tiny paragraph on page 12.

Again, you handled it all beautifully. I'm afraid I'd just blow up and get all sneery.

42. Poor Nutrition has Consequences, Just like Elections
Unfortunately, there are so many people that are wound up so tight that they must cram down their point of view with force, instead of relying on reality and facts. They are driven by Sugar and Carbohydrates and their thought processes burn out very quickly.

Their reality is obviously being exposed for the lie it really is, and it's no wonder they are angry and pissed. It's the first phase of their own reconciliation process in dealing with the mess the world is in, but they are still stuck in blaming others, because that's all they know.

I will give her props for keeping her voice just slightly above mine, despite her bugged out Bachmann eyes, and she didn't interrupt my retorts, so I hope when she got home, she looked at the TV and found out she was wrong about the Cantor story - and maybe, this will make her look into the "facts" she's been throwing around in public to who knows how many, about how the bill will not stop the pre-existing condition problems facing families, and adult kids living at home getting insured.

58. I commend you for actually speaking out....................
AND for keeping your cool about it.

One thing to remember about these people is that they've had 30+ years of propaganda from their right wing buddies and media sources telling them that they ARE the massive majority and that only traitors disagree with them. Remember too, that they also think that IF you don't actively DISAGREE with their bullshit, that you AGREE with them. And unfortunately, many in the middle take this tack too.

That's why EVERYBODY that DOES disagree with these RW terrorists need to speak up. Do it calmly and rationally if at all possible, but DO speak. You never know when some squishy MORer might be listening and taking in the RW talking points as being CORRECT simply because NOBODY IS SAYING DIFFERENTLY.
