Oh for the Love Of God, He's a tall lanky guy, that when he bows it is more exaggerated
because he is talk and lanky.

A little bow at the waist by the tall and lanky always looks deeper than one by the short waisted.

Look at Jimmy Stewart, and other lanky guys..

27. MUst I remind you that this is a Democratic board
While us liberals never walk in lockstep and always promote tolerance of other points of view, outright bashing of Democrats are not allowed. It is in the rules.

4. I'm glad our president has the agility to
pull off such a bow. There was a clip put up on DKos of other government officials shaking hands with the emperor and they looked either too fat to attempt it, or looked as though they had a rod up their spine.

Another thing, the video clip of the bow shows it taking up less than a second. The gotcha still hoto shows him at the lowest point and it keeps him there forever.

6. Oh there is some silliness and angst about a bow that Obama gave the Emp of Japan..
Obama does bows from the hips.. and so it looks deeper, that what the average person does from the waist.. All these guys do little bows when they meet each other, but because Obama bows from the hips, they get the video.. and do stop action shots, to try and say he is somehow being less than..

It is the angst of the hour.

Jackeens has a great thread,http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=1831&mesg_id=1831 where you can really see how Obama bows from the hips.. it is not some damn deeper than normal bow he does.. it is just his lanky old body type

29. His bowing....whether low or whatever.....
WAS COMPLETELY APPROPRIATE! It would have been disrespectful for him not to do it. Why is it even a discussion here???

Let them discuss it at right-wing hate sites and if you want to join in, go there and remind them (with a video clip) of how Bush would HOLD HANDS with Saudi Arabians because that is their custom.

"The Obama administration promised to reform the financial system and make it safe for the rest of us, but recent Congressional action is more likely to reset the fuse for another explosive calamity. The time bomb in this case is that arcane financial instrument known as derivatives--the hedging devices that the big banks sell to investors, corporations and other banks to reduce risk or evade the requirements to hold adequate capital on their books...

But the "reform" legislation approved by the House Financial Services Committee on October 15 is a fiesta of exemptions, exceptions and twisted legalese that effectively defeat the original purpose. Only experts can divine the actual meaning of the bill's densely worded provisions, and many of them have reacted with disgust. The "entanglements of derivatives exposures" among oversize banks "is the equivalent of the San Andreas Fault of our financial system," veteran financier Robert Johnson testified at an October 7 hearing on the draft bill. If Congress does not disarm derivatives, he warned, it could lead to another cascade of failure that would give regulators no choice but once again to rush to the rescue of the banks dubbed "too big to fail."

That risk is not theoretical. The largest banks that dominate this lucrative business seem to have gotten pretty much what they wanted--a free hand to keep peddling the indecipherable derivatives beyond the reach of regulators. According to the Financial Times, Goldman Sachs plans to market a new financial instrument that will allow banks to reduce the capital required to hold risky assets on their balance sheets. Goldman calls this product "insurance" and expects to sell it to the banks with toxic portfolios, enabling them to shift the risk off their balance sheets. It is not clear whether the new bill will interfere with this "innovation." Goldman evidently does not see a problem.

Who drafted this dubious piece of legislation? Bankers (or their lawyers) did. The leading sellers of derivatives are an exclusive club of five very large financial institutions--Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs--that hold 95 percent of the derivatives exposure among the largest banks (the total contract value exceeds $290 trillion). These are the same folks who toppled the global economy and compelled government to intervene with gigantic bailouts..."

"How to Bow in Japan"

<snip>

Instructions.Things You'll Need:

•The desire to understand the Japanese people
•A sense of composure

Step 1

Bowing in Japan is everywhere, and understanding it is everything. It takes some time for the foreigner to understand the many meanings of the bow and the many ways of bowing. But embracing the bow from the outset will improve one's chances at everything from crossing the street safely to meeting a mate.

Step 2

Understand that in Japan, the bow essentially means "I acknowledge you". The bow can mean things like "I see you", "Thank you", "Hello," "Good Day", "Pardon me", "Right away, sir", or "Amen". The Japanese people bow to show deep remorse as well as profound gratitude or respect -- these bows can be grand and sweeping or somber and slow. But the Japanese also bow to acknowledge almost all the sundry interpersonal interactions of life.
Remember the bow means "I acknowledge you": The Japanese also bow to acknowledge other drivers or pedestrians, the way Americans might give a small wave to a driver who lets them merge or to a bicyclist waiting cross an intersection.

Step
3The standard formal bow when meeting someone new in Japan requires simply that one stand firm facing the new person, with hands at one sides. Bow from the waist (not the neck) in a somewhat slow fashion. The lower the one bows, the greater the respect accorded, so it is important to know if one's counterpart is socially superior (a teacher, a doctor?) or not

17. Doesn't matter.
Pres. Obama was showing respectful behavior and humility, as opposed to disrespectful behavior and arrogance.

Even if Pres. Obama was 4' tall, his bow would still be appropriate.

21. I hate shaking hands!
I do it to be polite, but it is sometimes a very painful experience for me. Should there be an outcry because I would rather have a culture that bows politely than one where people sometimes grab your hand and give it a wrench.

My hands are arthritic with bone spurs/calcium deposits on most of my joints, so of course I am leery of hand shaking. But come to think of it my back is becoming more stiff with time, so the bowing might not be a good idea in a little while. ;)

I mean, surely one solo post to inform us all that something happened and that the nutcases are gonna be all in a tizzy for a week or two would have sufficed? We could have then mocked their stupidity and moved on?
