Democrats set to unveil $100B jobs legislation

Democrats set to unveil $100B jobs legislation
By Michael O'Brien - 03/10/10 02:54 PM ET

A top ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) unveiled a new $100 billion jobs bill Wednesday that will provide grants to local governments to save or create jobs.

Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, proposed a new stimulus bill that he argued should be paid for by deficit spending, and which could be attached to the Senate's jobs bill, pending the decision of House leaders.

"Our goal is to retain or create a million jobs," Miller said during an appearance on CNBC Wednesday morning. "There's some very serious concern that the small good news we're getting right now on the unemployment figures could be wiped out by what's going to happen in local governments if they don't get some assistance."

Miller's bill would make $100 billion in grants available to localities over the next two years in the form of grant programs for funds to save or create local jobs, or to create work-training programs for city workers.

2. City workers are us, to at least some extent.
I'll expand to include county, school-district and other governments, but they employ people from teachers to police officers to firefighters to trash collectors. And the money from this bill used to keep them working will spread around as they buy groceries, pay bills, get their cars fixed & so on.

4. Yeah, but what about the REST of us
who don't work for some municipality? A case can be made that all the stimulus package has done so far is keep government workers on a payroll.

Unless you can figure out how a society would work with 99% of its employed on a government payroll, this doesn't seem sustainable to me.

3. Google is easier than whining..."New Legislation Would Create 1 Million Jobs"
New Legislation Would Create 1 Million Jobs

by James Parks, Mar 10, 2010

Members of Congress and a bipartisan group of mayors today announced new legislation they say will create or save up to 1 million public- and private-sector jobs. Jobs saved would include those such as firefighters, police and teachers and others whose jobs are in jeopardy because of local government budget cuts.

The nation’s economic crisis is forcing states and municipalities to cut jobs that are critically important to local communities. State and local governments and school districts face $178 billion in budget deficits this year alone. Last month, AFSCME members across the country rallied in state capitals to urge legislators to raise revenue to save needed public services.

The Local Jobs for America Act, developed with mayors, county officials and others, also contains job-creation strategies to enable small businesses to help hundreds of thousands of individuals get private-sector jobs. A bill number has not yet been assigned.

5. Yeah, it's that 'create or save' language again
As long as there are at least one million people working in this country, then your subject line is technically true.

6. Keep bitching. Says a lot more about you than all the efforts being
made to improve a lousy situation.

Me, I prefer to applaud any kind of progress instead of being so negative.

But you have fun bemoaning whatever anyone is attempting.

7. Look, I'm really glad
that a bunch of pencil pushers in the city planning office get to keep their jobs.

I just wonder when they're going to get around to doing something for the rest of us. I've only been able to work part-time since December, 2008, and I guess I was damned lucky to get that. My full time customer service job moved to Pennsylvania, and the MFer's wouldn't even hire me for that, even though I had a DOZEN recommendations from the sales staff, including two of the Pennsylvania sales managers.

Bitchy? Yeah, I'm bitchy all right. Had a lot of hope, still waiting for the change.

10. The newly employed government people will buy goods and services
which will have an indirect impact expanding private jobs - hopefully that could open something up for you. Do any of the potential government jobs need the skills you have from your jobs?

11. I haven't bothered looking at those government jobs
There are hiring freezes all around in government, right now, the impetus is on keeping those currently employed to be still employed.

I work for a utility company that has essentially no competition, all I need is for my customers to have enough economic prosperity that my company makes enough money to hire me full-time someday. I sure have hope for the people who call me up every day who can't pay their bills that something good comes their way. At least I have a job, that's not the case for many of my company's customers.

The rising tide should lift all the boats, not just the ones that are connected to the dock.

16. If that were the case, the private sector should have done much better under Bush.
Hundreds of thousands of government jobs were created under Bush, with no concomitant gains in private employment or private wages.

15. I'm unemployed and looking for a job, so sorry, that doesn't wash.
The fact that steps are being taken to resolve what's going on is important to me, even if it's not to you. So you can be outraged all you want, as you like to be.

Me, I'll accept reality and hope for things to improve.

12. That still doesn't answer the question..
which I think is valid.

How do we staunch the bleeding and reverse the private sector job losses?

the government was the only part of the economy that grew during the Bush years. It's unsustainable to keep growing government while so many private jobs are disappearing and private sector wages continue to decline.
