Citizens of Connecticut
Please get your local legislators to pass recall law that applies to your senators!! That would be the biggest threat to Lieberman, the possibility of being recalled by his state ASAP.

1. Bad idea...
Edited on Sat Nov-14-09 12:22 PM by Chan790
as unpopular as Joe is, Dodd is reviled for taking money from mortgage lenders who subsequently got bailed out...Countrywide, in particular.

A recall law passed now would probably turn over both seats in the Senate to the GOP. I say only probably because the state GOP is DOA, the only truly viable candidate they have for national office (current Governor Jodi M. Rell) just announced her desire to retire and spend more time with her grandkids. Likewise, the infighting among leading state Democrats to replace both of them and their retiring governor would be brutal and probably damage the party enough to allow the CTGOP to recoup, if they weren't a potential threat now to win a seat, they'd be one soon.

(Edit: I've got to stop using pronouns like "our" when I haven't lived in CT in 3 years.)

2. I live in CT and I think you are correct. I am hoping Dodd's #'s improve
in a year. We shall see, they don't look good now.
Richard Blumenthal could run against Lieberman and could beat him in 2012. The key is picking the right candidate in the Dem primary.
The gov race will be an interesting one...will we finally have a Dem?

3. United States Senators CANNOT BE RECALLED
Edited on Sat Nov-14-09 03:28 PM by WeDidIt
Any law passed by the state to do so is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

Article I, Section 5. Paragraph 2. or the United States Constitution specifically grants the power to remove Senators to a 2/3 vote of the Senate and to remove House members to a 2/3 vote of the House. This is a specific power of the legislature and may not be usurped by any legislation entered by any state in the nation.

4. Can't
As stated above: Aside from being un-constitutional, Dodd would almost certainly be recalled first and barring any changes will almost certainly lose his seat next year, he is running behind BOTH of his potential competitors.

As for Lieberman, I am not sure there is enough support within the state for him to be recalled, even if it was allowed.

5. This comes up all the time on DU
and drives me nuts because the constitution is very clear on the issue.

And wisely so due to the mess of every sitting Congresscritter and Senator facing a potential recall election at any time back home. It would destroy the very fabric of the most deliberative body in the nation (the Senate) and radicalize the House far more than it is today.
