**** Heads Up: POTUS Rails Against the Evil Insurance Overlords, 11am EST! ****
Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 10:59 AM by Clio the Leo
(because half of y'all didn't like the "Speaks on Health Insurance Reform" title the WH used last week, I tweaked it a bit :) )

Video...
http://www.whitehouse.gov/live/president-obama-speaks-health-insurance-reform

http://www.cnn.com/video/flashLive/live.html?stream=stream1

http://cspan.org/Watch/C-SPAN.aspx

And On CSPAN (television.)

Excerpt from his speech...

"Every year, insurance companies deny more people coverage because they have a pre-existing condition. Every year, they drop more people’s coverage when they’re sick and need it most. Every year, they raise premiums higher and higher. Just last month, Anthem Blue Cross in California tried to jack up rates by nearly 40%. In my home state of Illinois rates are going up by as much as 60%. And you just heard from Leslie, who was hit with a 100% rate increase. 100%. One letter from her insurance company and her premiums doubled. Just like that."

http://www.politico.com/politico44/wbarchive/whiteboard03082010.html

He will be showcasing one of the victims of high insurance premiums. This woman was told last year that her premium would double. If she did NOT pay the higher premium, her deductible would go from $500 to $5,000.

97. Costing too much
Basically they cost too much. To a great degree this is because of the "fee for service" model under which they work. In a single payer, or similar plans, they don't have to work in that environment.

70. Oh, they'll "cover" the child... but not the procedure or some of the meds the child
needs because they're investigational or not medically necessary. Or they'll cover the child but the premiums will be so astronomical that virtually no one can afford them. If the insurance companies don't have special teams thinking up new ways to deny these special populations coverage in the future, it's only because they're confident that their current methods will be sufficient. Until someone is providing health insurance on a non-profit basis, I don't expect that situation to change.

That's not even arguable. Consider the alternative - which is nothing.

Let's see. Which is worse - five years versus a generation plus?

...Not sure I buy your stipulation on the five-year delay in implemention of protection from discrimiation for pre-existing anyway.

101. This is meaningless
Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 12:38 PM by AllentownJake
There is a debt bomb sitting on the books of every bank in the world, everytime the FDIC seizes a bank the assets are 25% to 40% overvalued and they are still siezing things at very consistent rate.

They are hoarding cash to prepare for it and the only institution that is lending is the federal government.

Health Insurance :boring:

100. I kind of feel like we've been over these before...
1. People can't afford the mandatory part of this. That's a fact that no amount of spinning will change.
2. People will be forced to pay for it anyway thereby obliterating their already paper thin discretionary spending which will in turn impact on the economy due to less consumer spending and in the end making sure job growth simply will not happen.
3. The insurance bill that they've been working on will put everyone in today's showcased victim's shoes.
4. This bill will result in the democratic party giving their seal of approval to more or less ending abortions through a side door tactic. See Moyer's Journal last Friday night.
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/03052010/watch4.html
"If any health care reform emerges from the bonfire of partisanship and dissembling in Washington, one thing seems certain -- it will be incorrigibly biased against a woman's freedom of conscience when it comes to abortion.

She will be ever more subject to the state's control and ever more at the mercy of religious doctrine to which she may or may not subscribe. In this respect, both reform bills in the House and Senate differ only slightly. Each is tough on women."

111. I saw it on CSPAN. He had the old fire, the crowd loved him.
For the first time in a while, I'm optimistic for 2010 election after seeing him connect with the crowd. He asked them to stand up with him against the Tea Partiers' disinformation and the insurance company abuses.

He's got his campaign issue!

And it ain't bipartisanship.

In a debating sense, which side would you rather take: the insurance companies and the tea-baggers or the long list of Americans harmed by insurance company abuses?

The question is, who else in his administration can make a speech like that? Joe Biden, probably.
