Specialist Alexis Hutchinson of Oakland, CA is the single mother of an 11-month old boy, Kamani. Currently she is confined to Hunter Army Airfield near Savannah, Georgia, where she has been posted since February 2008, and threatened with a court martial if she does not agree to be deployed to Afghanistan, even though she has not found anyone to take care of her child while she is away.

2. This is just unbelievable. I understand that the Army is overextended,
but are they so desperate that they have to go to these lengths for personnel?

3. Her mother (the grandmother) was supposed to be part of the plan, and then backed out...
That's gotta suck.

I can't help but wonder what other details are involved, but this seems like a SNAFU all around.

6. the grandmother is already caring for a special needs daughter,
her sick mother (the great-grandmother), and a sickly sister. she tried to care for the grandbaby, but realized she couldn't and had to take him back to his mother in georgia. the army told the mom they would give her more time to find a caretaker for the baby, but then reversed and said she had to go afghanistan now, childcare or not.

i can't imagine how this must be affecting the morale of the other parent-soldiers in her unit.

7. The heartless military
I served over twenty years in the military,I would not serve in todays military where the rich boys and girls stay home and profit from the misery of the poor soldiers.Bring back the draft let us all defend our country, not just the poor.

8. let's do it the Roman Republic way
make the rich fight for the country, since they have the most to defend; exempt the poor, just like the ancient Romans during the Republic did.

9. and by "exempt", do you mean "kill", as the romans did?
That seems a bit brutal by today's measures.
