Cornyn, Brownback introduce bill to back regime change in Iran
Cornyn, Brownback introduce bill to back regime change in Iran
By Bridget Johnson - 02/14/10 08:40 PM ET

Two Republican senators have introduced a bill to "fully and publicly support efforts of the Iranian people to oppose and remove the current regime."

The Iran Democratic Transition Act was announced Thursday by Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), the same day that the Islamic Republic celebrated the 31st anniversary of the revolution and also the same day that Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), GOP Whip Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) introduced a bill that would slap sanctions on Iranians who violate the human rights of other Iranians.

Cornyn and Brownback's bill -- citing human-rights violations, nuclear weapons pursuit, support of terrorism and "belligerent rhetoric regarding attacks on both Israel and the United States" -- not only backs regime change but advocates it. Both are positions the Obama administration has shied away from as the White House continues to pursue diplomatic avenues to convince Iran to halt its uranium enrichment.

Iran, which claims its nuclear program is for peaceful energy and medical purposes, has ignored White House deadlines and pushed forward with its uranium enrichment efforts.

Cornyn and Brownback's bill would authorize non-military assistance to pro-democracy Iranian opposition groups, create a special envoy for democracy and human rights in Iran, explore a mulilateral regional framework on human rights, and require President Barack Obama to submit two reports to Congress detailing both the implementation of the bill and a plan to back the Iranian people "following the establishment of a transitional government in Iran."

4. I insist, then, that they put on uniforms and be the first to try "regime change" over there.

6. Sam Brownback never served a day in uniform...
Sam Brownback has spent his life in the service of others. He was born in Parker, Kansas and raised on a farm where his mother and father still live. He was a leader in high school, in Future Farmers of America as state president, as student body president at Kansas State University and president of his class at University of Kansas Law School.

Sam served as a White House Fellow in the first Bush Administration and was the youngest Secretary of Agriculture in Kansas history. When he was 38, he was elected to the House of Representatives with the Republican Revolution in 1994. In 1996, he was elected to the U.S. Senate seat held by Bob Dole.

Why put yourself in danger to achieve your goals when you can send someone else?

Here he is, riding the kind of bull that would later spew from his mouth...

5. When even Dead-eye Dick thinks attacking Iran is a bad idea,
you know you've gone completely off the rails. Even the tried-and-true warmongers are tired of mongering (for now).

This is great news for Dems. The GOP wants to cut medicare, privatize social security and invade Iran! The difference between the parties could not be starker.

Should be take bets on how long before John "Bomb bomb bomb Iran" McCain jumps on board? His wacko opponent, J.D. Hayworth, will probably be all over this idea, which means so will McCain!

7. We did regime change in the 1950's and it was a disaster.
Now we want to change it again. Maybe we should keep our nose out of other countries business.

13. We have some "human rights" situations to sort through over here right now
Maybe we should fix those before we start crowing about the human rights records of the Iranian governmnent?
