12. Alas, she would still crush him in a Reagan - Mondale style landslide.
First of all, he'd have displaced a sitting President from the same party, suggesting a total lack of unity. Secondly, and crucially, if the media and their GOP pals can convince millions of people that Obama is running a radical, socialist agenda then they'd impale Franken gruesomely.

37. He took on an incumbant Republican who was also mayor of St. Paul for 8 years.
And Franken had neither ran for nor held political office when he took the plunge for the US Senate.

It was a hell of an achievement, perhaps more impressive than Obama's victories over first Clinton, then McCain.

38. But Coleman wasn't popular
Not to mention he was a complete wingnut. I dunno, IMO a non-controversial Democrat could have won by a larger margin. I'm not calling for a centrist, but a Democrat without baggage.

42. But he was experienced and a former Dem.
He was a windsock and a weasel, but that isn't always a negative in terms of getting votes.

A different, more experienced Democrat probably could have won with a larger margin, true, but Franken pulled it off and he's doing well in the Senate, so it all worked out. I think most of the controversy was manufactured, anyway. Like it's surprising a talk-radio host said something that would irritate somebody, right?

He might not go national, but two or three terms in the senate is a very respectable career.

Edited on Sat Feb-13-10 09:49 AM by onenote
(an election, that, by the way, Coleman lost.) Coleman was a one-term senator who narrowly won election in 2002 after Paul Wellstone died. I like Al, and think he's going to be a terrific Senator, but to suggest that Franken's victory was even remotely as impressive as Obama's convincing victory over Clinton in the primaries and his even more convincing victory over McCain nationally is plain silly. Obama, you might be interested in knowing, got over 350,000 more votes than Franken.
