United We Serve: Feed a Neighbor

United We Serve: Feed a Neighbor

Posted by Nicola Goren on November 25, 2009

As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, let us also pause and acknowledge that many of our neighbors are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table. The President and the First Lady are calling on all of us to come together to solve hunger in our communities.

In this spirit, the Corporation for National and Community Service in coordination with the White House and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is launching the United We Serve: Feed a Neighbor initiative. The new initiative raises awareness of hunger issues and equips Americans with the resources to mobilize against the hunger crisis.

Here’s what you can do to get started fighting hunger today:

Nicola Goren is the Acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service

4. My God this is insulting in so many ways
Why doesn't he just try Herbert Hoover or George H.W. Bush's thousand points of light approach to national epidemics.

5. Ridiculous.
You're comparing symbolism to a commitment to action

Absurd.

7. Good program
My apologies. Encouraging volunteerism is good, encouraging it as a solution to an epidemic which can be helped by a Government program is silly.

Hopefully they have less of a need for such programs in 3 years.

10. Supply and Demand Pro
More people needing help, less people that normally give. I know the United Way isn't getting 2% of my salary right now.

12. "I know the United Way isn't getting 2% of my salary right now."
So because you can't give it's a bad idea? Also, the program encourages volunteering. Soup kicthens and other organizations are always looking for help.

14. Depends where they were
the one I used to volunteer in, in Indiana had sort of a waiting list for groups to come in and help.

18. Oh brother.
The site linked to in the OP offers a searchable database to find organizations that need help. You are now making excuses to continue complaining about whatever it is you're complaining about.

20. I actually stopped complaining a while ago
You kept trying to find something to fight about.

Charity is good, it doesn't fully solve the problem because when there is a downturn, charities suffer with everyone else. As long as the President is also evaluating government solutions, good for the President.

16. The United Way isn't getting a lot of people's 2% is my point
They don't have the funds they had 2 years ago, and it isn't because the American people are selfish.

9. I gave last week
honestly, not much, but I gave, and always give. My point is the food banks are going to have increased demand and less supply due to the economy. Focusing on charity to bail out this problem is a bad idea at this time, people give what they can afford to.

That being said, you did provide that the administration is looking into other ways to address the problem other than this program.

Thank you for the link.

Never a bad time, ever. Katrina, charity is good. Tsunami, charity is good. Never a bad time. Neighbors helping neighbors = good.

What are you complaining about: the President encouraging people to help each other?

13. Actually there are times when you are going to get lower returns
a lot of those people at food banks this year, probably gave in the past. I guess you are not seeing my point. If this was the answer to the problem, the problem would have been solved years ago. You posted a link to a program they are starting to address kids. You need to do more of that. It is less susceptible to the whims of the economy.

I'm helping out a non-profit with their accounting right now, they had better years in the past.
